SNOW DAY! Post your pet snow pics, and take a moment to check the safety of your outdoor critters.

If you’re new to our story and Sadie’s, Sadie was in a dog house fire in February of 2021 when a space heater tipped over and her straw bedding caught fire; She was kenneled and couldn’t escape. She suffered burns to more than 70% of her body. She has made a full recovery and is living her best life. You can see her here enjoying the snow day the best way she knows how… snoozing. Some breeds are built for this weather (see Norman, a Great Pyrenees, living the dream), but many are not. If you’re forced with keeping your pets outside in this weather, make sure they’re safe, and check on them regularly.

Sadie’s amazing story is captured on YouTube and our website. We’ll post the link to the first part of her story in the comments. Viewer beware, it’s not easy to watch, but let it serve as a cautionary tale and lesson to be learned by all.

What is IVDD? Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is a condition where the discs between a dog’s vertebrae degenerate or rupture, causing pain, nerve damage, or even paralysis. It’s common in breeds like Dachshunds, French Bulldogs, Corgis, and Beagles. Signs to Watch For: • Sudden back or neck pain • Difficulty walking or dragging hind legs • Reluctance to jump or climb stairs • Loss of bladder or bowel control Treatment Options: 1️⃣ Conservative Management: • Rest: Strict crate rest for 4–6 weeks to reduce inflammation. • Medication: Pain relievers and anti-inflammatories prescribed by your vet. 2️⃣ Physical Therapy: After rest, rehab exercises can help regain strength. 3️⃣ Surgery: For severe cases, spinal surgery (Hemilaminectomy) may be necessary to remove pressure on the spinal cord. Prevention Tips: • Maintain a healthy weight to reduce stress on the spine. • Avoid activities like jumping off furniture—use ramps instead. • Provide regular, low-impact exercise. Remember: Early detection and treatment are crucial. On January 15th, Zoe presented to our neurology department for evaluation of acute paraparesis. After diagnostics, her CT scan revealed concussive extrusion disc disease at L2 and L3. We immediately got to work! Each department worked along side eachother to come up with a treatment plan to best help Zoe become as comfortable and as much like herself as she can be!
