Double J Ranch

Double J Ranch Running and performance bred quarter horses The Double J was founded on the hope of producing top performing Quarter Horses.

Jesse has been riding for 30 years and competed in barrel racing for several years as well as helping friends train their horses before deciding to take some time off. Her first show season was with her pony she trained at the age of 6. In that season they won her first trophy and years later that pony carried a friend to third place in the pony divison. She trained with Lynn Mckenzie and won the

novice competition at one of the clinics she attended. During her three years of competition she won five buckles, three trophies, and qualified for the NBHA World show in both the youth and open divisions four times, on all three horses she competed on. In 2000, she and Tee Gees Ghost were in first place at a local riding club in the senior divison before having to make a early stop halfway through the season. She trained horses with a well known local trainer and has started her own colts. The Double J was officially started in 2012 with the first mares bred. 2014 has been a great year for us so far and 2015 looks to be the best year of all. It has been a lifelong dream to breed, train and compete with top performance horses and that dream is finally coming to reality.

'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the barn,
Not a creature was stirring, not even a yarn.
The hay bales were stacked by the lanterns with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.

The horses were nestled all snug in their stalls,
While visions of sugar cubes danced on the walls.
And I in my overalls, with a pitchfork in hand,
Had just settled down to survey the land.

When out in the pasture there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my seat to see what was the matter.
Away to the window, I dashed in a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the hayfield gave a soft, gentle glow,
And the frost on the grass made a beautiful show.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer.

With a jolly old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles, his reindeer they came,
And he whistled and shouted and called them by name:

“Now, Dasher! Now, Dancer! Now, Prancer and V***n!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! On, Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the barn! To the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!”

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the barn-top the reindeer they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys and St. Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes—how they twinkled! His dimples, how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself.
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk.
And laying a finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose.

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

Winter is one of my favorite seasons, it finally starts to cool down and about the end of the year you start feeling foal kicks. You can find me outside in the pasture after dinner usually with my hand on a broodmare belly feeling baby flutters. I’ve felt Chevy’s baby kick several times already but I’m finally starting to feel ice’s move around more. I love sharing the journey through breeding to foal, and I’ve attached my favorite reference picture. Ice is right about 161 days in foal now, so her baby’s a little bigger than a rabbit, maybe about 10 pounds. Chevys a little further along and I suspect her to be a bit closer to 200 days, so probably about the size of my heeler mix and around 30 pounds or so. In the next couple of months, we should be seeing movement and I can’t wait to share those videos with y’all!
