Pet Toxicology Experts Release Top 10 Pet Poisons List for Dogs MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (Dec. 13, 2023)

According to case data released by Pet Poison Helpline, marijuana is on this year’s Top 10 Pet Poisons list for dogs. Chocolate, however, is a toxin that has cross-over appeal to both cats and dogs. Pet Poison Helpline provides toxicology advice for all species of animals, including dogs, cats, birds, small mammals, large animals and exotic species.

Here is a list of Pet Poison Helpline’s Top 10 Pet Poisons for all species in 2023: 1. Chocolate 2. Grapes/Raisons 3. Ibuprofen 4. Xylitol 5. Neurotoxic Rodenticide (Bromethalin) 6. Marijuana 7. Onions/Chives/Leeks/Shallots (Allium species) 8. Anticoagulant Rodenticides 9. Vitamin D3 (supplement) 10. Carprofen (pain medication) “Chocolate is once again our top toxin for all species,” explained Renee Schmid, DVM, DABT, DABVT, a senior veterinary toxicologist at Pet Poison Helpline. “Even though it is widely known that pets shouldn’t consume chocolate-containing products, they constantly find a way. While chocolate consumption is the number one toxin for dogs, it is the number two poison on the feline list.” Common chocolate poisoning signs include hyperactivity, restlessness, vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst, elevated heart rate, hypertension, abnormal heart rhythms, tremors and hyperthermia.

Following is the Top 10 Pet Poisons list for dogs in 2023: 1. Chocolate 2. Grapes/Raisons 3. Xylitol 4. Ibuprofen 5. Neurotoxic Rodenticide (Bromethalin) 6. Marijuana 7. Anticoagulant Rodenticides 8. Onions/Chives/Leeks/Shallots (Allium species) 9. Vitamin D3 (supplement) 10. Carprofen (pain medication).

Carprofen is a prescription pain-relief product approved by the FDA specifically for dogs. While it is an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) similar to ibuprofen for humans, it is a safer product for dogs when used at therapeutic dosing levels to treat short and long-term pain.

Oaklawn Animal Hospital Clients:

As everyone is most likely aware, there is a mysterious new canine respiratory disease in the area. We have been seeing random cases of this over the past year. To the best of our knowledge, we have not seen any fatalities yet, however some dogs have died in the Pacific Northwest. The state veterinarians in Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts have been working on isolating this organism since last winter. Currently they are thinking it is some form of an unculturable bacteria. Treatment revolves around ruling out other more common causes of respiratory disease such as kennel cough and pneumonia and treating for those.
It is important to keep your dog up to date on Bordetella (kennel cough) and canine flu vaccination. Currently it is advised to try to limit your dog’s exposure to other dogs.
Please monitor your dog for any respiratory signs including cough, sneezing, nasal or ocular discharge and any trouble breathing. Also watch for decreased appetite and exercise. If your dog is sick, we may recommend bloodwork, respiratory panels and/or chest radiographs.
