Living History Days

In June, 1782, Colonel William Crawford was traveling along the Sandusky river after having his forces defeated and divided at the Battle of Battle Island near modern-day Upper Sandusky. He and his small band of militia were attacked here-and all were killed except Colonel Crawford and Dr. John Knight. They were returned to the Native Village on Tymochtee Creek-Colonel Crawford to be tortured and burned at the stake and Dr. Knight to be taken by the Shawnee to suffer the same fate. He escaped to tell this tale.

Living History Days began 16 years ago as a 1 day event with questionable accuracy and a lot of 21st century participants. Today, we are a 2 day juried event that focuses on accuracy in all areas of our event. We re-enact the capture of Col. Crawford twice each day, have historical presentors speaking on Native and military life in the 18th century, children’s activities and period-correct vendors. We host a bus tour to Wyandot County so you can hear the rest of Col. Crawford’s story from his wife, Hannah, and a Lantern Tour Saturday night that focuses on all aspects of Native American life. All of this is free to the public, held at the beautiful Lowe-Volk Park.

Lowe-Volk Park, 2401 St. Rt. 598, Crestline, Ohio is the home of the Crawford Park District. In addition to the historical activities of Living History Days, the park also has over a mile of nature trails thru the woods along the headwaters of the Sandusky River. The Nature Center has many displays, reptiles and animals and The Learning Tree-the perfect place for kids to play. There is even a pond for fishing.
