We're feeling the pre-Friday desire for a nap, too - but we'll refrain and keep working hard while our animals enjoy the leisurely life. Happy Thursday y'all!

We are going to be in Oakridge! On October 28th we will be in Oakridge providing basic wellness exams and vaccines for your dogs and cats.

Normally we provide a mobile service, but because Oakridge is out of our service area we are partnering with Totally Pawsome Pet Care to provide a one-day Wellness/Vaccine Day.

If Oakridge residents want to sign up for the Wellness/Vaccine Day - they can go to Totally Pawsome Pet Care and Kerstie will have more information and a form to fill out.

We’re really hoping to bring great vet care to Oakridge!

We are still in summer mode, but we wanted to give everyone a heads up that we will be closed for Labor Day (September 1st).

As per the usual, if you have an emergency (hopefully not!) on Labor Day - please visit our web page and scroll to the bottom for emergency hospital options for the different species.

We will back to our regular hours Tuesday, September 2nd - we still hope no emergencies, but we’ll be back in action!

Help us Help you!

See the email we sent yesterday for more details, but the gist:
---Due to a large increase in patients needing seen urgently, we are seeing fewer wellness appointments per week - therefore, for truly wellness/no concern appointments we are booking out at least 2 months.
---The fact that we are asking you to be patient just means that your animal is in good health and thankfully can wait a bit. It also means that if your animal(s) is the one having the urgent need – we can hopefully get you seen in a timely manner.

How you can help us help you:
---Give us as much notice as possible. Whether it be for dog/cat/livestock wellness exams, herd health, vaccines, livestock pregnancy tests, surgery, disbudding, etc. - the more notice you give us the more likely we will be to schedule you 'on time'. In some instances, letting us know as soon as the animal is born is the best time!
---Tell us ALL the animals you are wanting seen, and ALL the services you are requesting. Even if the service seems small, the time it takes to accomplish that service may not be!

Ways to beat the heat!

Yes to the following:
---Stay inside and bring your animals inside when feasible. We won't judge if you bring your Longhorn in too, just make sure to send us a picture. We take no responsibility for any damage that may occur, though!
---Stay hydrated. Electrolytes are always in fashion. There are several options for electrolytes for all the species.
---Fans and misters. If you think a cool mist gently blowing on you sounds nice - so do most of your furry and feathered friends.
---Shade. If you must be outside, stick to it. Alpacas and llamas may choose to sun themselves. The rest of us, as Vitamin D deficient as we might be, should not try to get our yearly dose in a couple days.

No to the following:
---Do not walk your dog, goat, rooster or other pet on hot sidewalk/pavement.
---Do not exercise in the heat - playing fetch, halter-breaking, etc. is fun - but heat stroke is not.
---Do not take water fun for granted. While water can be an excellent way to cool off, it also comes with it's own dangers. Too cold of water, over-exertion swimming, and blue green algae blooms are just a few to watch out for.

Thank you for everyone’s patience while Dr. Furrer was on vacation. Dr. Furrer did some tent camping and attempted to relax, but even better is when our patients like Mr. Macallan get to go glamping!

Pinkeye - a diagnosis none of us want to hear, but that is unfortunately quite common. It is a highly contagious disease that is generally treatable, but we prefer to prevent.

Best prevention is to do ALL of the following:

—Cattle Pinkeye Vaccine. Should be given 3-6 weeks prior to the onset of pinkeye season. Helps limit infection and reduce severity.

—Fly Control. Transmission of pinkeye is via flies - and we have plenty of them here! Treat animals of all ages with a long-lasting insecticide (ear tags, powders, pour-ons, etc.) + Premise control (insecticide that works on a variety of surfaces - use in/around facilities) + Additional measures as needed (back rubbers, oilers, etc.).

—Environmental Management. Pasture management - Pollen, seed heads, dust, and UV light all cause irritation - reducing these (keeping pastures trimmed, dust controlled, and direct sunlight limited) will reduce pinkeye. Facilities management - Sanitation! Promptly eliminate organic debris such as wet/rotting feed, manure, etc. to keep flies at bay.
