Pinkeye - a diagnosis none of us want to hear, but that is unfortunately quite common. It is a highly contagious disease that is generally treatable, but we prefer to prevent.

Best prevention is to do ALL of the following:

—Cattle Pinkeye Vaccine. Should be given 3-6 weeks prior to the onset of pinkeye season. Helps limit infection and reduce severity.

—Fly Control. Transmission of pinkeye is via flies - and we have plenty of them here! Treat animals of all ages with a long-lasting insecticide (ear tags, powders, pour-ons, etc.) + Premise control (insecticide that works on a variety of surfaces - use in/around facilities) + Additional measures as needed (back rubbers, oilers, etc.).

—Environmental Management. Pasture management - Pollen, seed heads, dust, and UV light all cause irritation - reducing these (keeping pastures trimmed, dust controlled, and direct sunlight limited) will reduce pinkeye. Facilities management - Sanitation! Promptly eliminate organic debris such as wet/rotting feed, manure, etc. to keep flies at bay.

All species are different, and all species have different ‘normals’ - heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, etc.

Whether it’s just another fun fact to have, in case you need to determine if there is something abnormal occurring with your animal, or if we ask for your animals’ TPR (Temperature, Pulse, Respiratory Rate) as part of triage - here are the normal ranges for the species we see (adult parameters, young animals are different):

Cattle: Heart rate 45-85 beats per minute, Respiratory rate 25-50 breaths per minute, Temperature 100-102.5 F.

Goats and sheep: Heart rate 65-90 beats per minute, Respiratory rate 15-35 breaths per minute, Temperature 101-103.5 F.

Llamas and alpacas: Heart rate 60-90 beats per minute, Respiratory rate 10-30 breaths per minute, Temperature 99.5-101.5 F.

Pigs: Heart rate 70-120 beats per minute, Respiratory rate 32-60 breaths per minute, Temperature 101.5-103.5 F.

Dogs: Heart rate 70-120 beats per minute, Respiratory rate 18-40 breaths per minute, Temperature 99.5-102.5 F.

Cats: Heart rate 120-140 beats per minute, Respiratory rate 16-40 breaths per minute, Temperature 100.5-102.5 F.

Poultry: Heart rate 350-450 beats per minute, Respiratory rate 15-60 breaths per minute, Temperature 105-109 F.

If you’re going to castrate your calves - do it early!

Here are a few things to keep in mind when castrating your animals:

—Timing – You can castrate calves as early as within 24 hours of birth, and is best if done within the first 2 weeks of life. Older castrations are more painful (some requiring full surgery, local blocks, and pain medication), have longer recovery times, and increased risk of complications.

—Method:
--Banding - If you are banding ensure that your bands are the correct size. For calves 24 hours to 2 weeks old, generally the correct size bands are the 'green cheerios'.
--Cutting – If you are cutting make sure you have a clean scalpel and that you have thoroughly washed your hands and/or are wearing gloves.

---Have fly spray or aerosolized bandage ready. This is especially important during fly season, but it is always important to ensure the castration (banding or cutting) site stays clean and fly-free. We are fans of Alushield - an OTC spray 'bandage'.

---Always count to TWO! Count at least twice! Missing one or both testicles is usually realized months later, when the 'steer' seems suspiciously bull-like - and that's when Dr. Furrer gets called in. As much as we love seeing calves, bulls and all cattle - counting to two might save a vet visit!

We love seeing your cute, best hairdoed, beautiful/handsome, stylish creatures!

We love seeing them in person, of course, but did you know you can also add photos of them on our Pet Portal?

Go to the Portal (https://petportal.vet/barn-home-veterinary-clinic) and login. You will be able to see each of our patients that we have on your account. If you look at each profile you will be able to see the animal info, exams and treatments that we have done, vaccine reminders, etc. ... as well as add a picture of your animal!

If you do add a photo, we see it on our end every time we view their chart - you’ll be giving us extra smiles every day!
