Zombie - dominant white birds bred to fibro for a “ look” These do not breed true after f-1 generation. I encourage research if you plan to breed these. Mine are Svarthona ( not ayam cemani) Leghorn cross These are semi sexlinked based on fibro expression ( females get better transfer of fibro) They lay an off white egg.

“ Diablo” are my project to create another “ wicked “ looking bird. This is in its early stages and will develop more each generation ( hopefully)
The end goal is a sleek all black bird w horns. Pictures are progress but not the end goal. Great feed conversation, and steady production of smaller off white eggs. Semi flighty so far. Projects take years , bear with me. .

Why Are So Many Chicks Arriving Dead in the Mail This Time of Year?

It’s heartbreaking, but it’s that time of year again. Backyard chicken groups are flooded with posts about chicks arriving dead in the mail. Why does this happen? The short answer: it’s still winter in most of the country.

Even if you live in a warmer southern state, the conditions along the shipping route and at the hatchery matter. Many hatcheries are in colder climates, and chicks often spend hours in air cargo or delivery trucks. Even with heat packs, they cannot survive temperatures below 40°F, especially in small orders that don’t generate enough body heat.

For example, my farmstead sits in a microclimate where January temperatures were in the 10s-20s with snow, but just 45 minutes down the mountain, there was no snow, and temps stayed above 20°F. That short distance can mean life or death for shipped chicks.

Now, dreaming about your flock while it’s cold is normal—and pre-ordering chicks is a great idea! It lets you secure the breeds you want before they sell out. However, it’s your responsibility to choose a shipping date when the weather is warm enough. Pre-order for early spring when conditions are better rather than demanding a mid-winter shipment. If you insist on shipping during freezing temperatures, you’re knowingly putting your chicks at risk.

For aspiring poultry breeders, this is a lesson in patience and accountability. Don’t blame the USPS for dead chicks when this could have been prevented by delaying your order until the weather improves. The postal system can’t control temperatures or shipping choices made by customers or hatcheries. If your customers are being impatient just educate them of the risks. Customers want their chicks alive and thriving as well.

Also, just because one hatchery or breeder gets lucky shipping chicks during the winter doesn’t mean you will too. After seven-plus years of doing this, I’ve learned the hard way myself even- to not take risks that are avoidable. Waiting for the right conditions ensures your chicks arrive healthy and ready to thrive. 🐣
