Greetings!

We are happy to announce that Dr. Violet has recently achieved FEI certification as a Permitted Treatment Veterinarian and as a Level-one Officiating Veterinarian.
The Federation Equestre Internationale is the world body governing rules and regulations for horse competitions of jumping, dressage, para dressage , three day eventing , endurance, driving and vaulting.
To obtain certification, Dr. Violet had to
complete many hours of online training
under the guidance of FEI veterinarian Dr. Mike Tomlinson of Thousand Oaks, California.

With his credentials Dr. Violet now has privileges at FEI sanctioned events to inspect and treat competition horses.
Approved veterinarians along with other officials ensure the equine athletes are treated properly for any illness or injury and enforce strict biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
FEI veterinarians also enforce anti-doping regulations to promote clean and safe competition.

Dr. Violet is the attending Permitted Treatment Veterinarian for the Mozart Memorial CVI vaulting competition currently being held at Silver Tail Farm in Creswell.
Vaulting is a particularly difficult equestrian activity requiring tremendous athleticism from the vaulter and steady continual cooperation from the horse .
It truly is a beautiful sport to watch !

This event in Creswell could not have occurred without the dedication of the FEI team and the
tremendous efforts of Silver Tail Farm
and hosts Emily Park and Laura Frederiksen- Park !

We had a special treat last week, when Dr. Erica McKenzie, department head of equine internal medicine at Oregon State University, paid a special visit to do a follow up liver/abdominal ultrasound examination.
Our patient was Stetson, and nine-year-old miniature horse gelding, who had been suffering from acute inflammatory liver disease.
He had a brief hospitalization stay at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital six weeks ago, but has returned home and is recovering very nicely.
Long-term liver dysfunction is not expected .

Many thanks to Dr. McKenzie and all who helped Stetson at Oregon State!!

Clinic Update:

We would like to announce that the clinic is resuming regular business hours:

Monday – Friday

8:00 am to 5:30 pm

The last week has brought about many challenges for us as a community. Like many of you, our clinic was without power for an extended period. We now have power, but our phones and internet are still down. There is no word as to when it will be restored completely, which is why your patience and consideration during this time is very much appreciated.

As always, we are continuing to provide ambulatory large animal emergency services. Call 541-895-5665 to connect to our after-hours operator or you may call our on-call doctor directly at 541-729-7185. If you have a small animal emergency, please call the Emergency Veterinary Hospital at 541-746-0112 or Wilvet South at 541-838-0577.

Our top priority is to be able to meet the needs of our patients and clients. We will do our very best to get back to those that need to be rescheduled and any new appointments that are needed as well. If you need to reach us, the best option is to email us at [email protected]. We will be checking email during regular business hours and have found this is the best way to communicate at this time.

Once again, thank you for your patience and understanding as we attempt to re-open the clinic to full capacity after the inclement weather conditions.

Sincerely,

South Willamette Veterinary Clinic

Hello all !

Spring is just around the corner and now is a great time to update your horse’s immunizations.

Eastern, Western, and West Nile encephalitis are viral diseases primarily transmitted by mosquitoes.
Respiratory diseases such as influenza, rhinopneumonitis, and strangles are more common when horses are congregating at breeding barns, performance arenas, and stables.

SWVC is offering a spring vaccination special …..

If five or more horses are vaccinated at a single time the farm call fee will be waived
for barns located within a 20 mile radius from Creswell, or if the appointment can be scheduled as an ‘in area’ call.
Other services can be provided such as brief physical exams, bloodwork, f***l examinations, deworming, and/or dentistry.

Your horse’s health is so important ,
so provide the best protection possible !

Call us at (541) 895-5665 and speak to one of our customer service representatives to schedule your farm visit.

Greetings !

Dr. Violet recently attended two educational seminars.

The first was a three hour online session regarding diseases and treatment of the fetlock.
A panel of imaging and lameness clinicians detailed the most common soft tissue and bony injuries of the fetlock joint with emphasis on diagnosis and various treatment modalities.
The seminar was hosted by Nucleus ProVets which produces Noltrex, a novel injectable synthetic joint lubricant.

The following weekend Dr. Violet traveled to Sunriver for the annual winter meeting hosted by the Northwest Equine Practitioners Association.
This year’s meeting focused on equine ophthalmology.
About 25 members braved the weather and spent all of Saturday learning the latest in eye diseases and treatment
from Dr. Amy Knolliger and Dr. Carrie Breaux,
both board-certified ophthalmologists.

A few pearls that were taken home:

1) color vision-
Yellow pigments in the equine lens reduce glare and improve contrast.
Horses mostly see shades of blue, yellow, green, and gray.

2) blind spots-
Horses have excellent peripheral vision.
Their biggest blind spots are directly in front of their forehead, and underneath their muzzle.
Their muzzle hairs help protect them from their blind spots.
Something to think about when clipping their muzzle !

3) equine recurrent uveitis- ( moon blindness)
Most common cause of blindness.
Eight times more prevalent in Appaloosas and POA’s than the general horse population.
A gene sequence has been identified predisposing individuals for developing ERU.
UC Davis offers genetic testing so that owners of these horses can take more preventative measures and possibly reconsider use of them as breeding animals.

Also while at the meeting Dr. Violet assumed his position as co-president of NEPA with Dr. Karen Blake from Bend equine.
NEPA has a long tradition of providing quality continuing education for its members both remotely and in collegial settings.

Continuing Education

Greetings !

Tuesday night Dr. Violet attended a CE dinner meeting in Wilsonville featuring Dr. John Madigan, professor emeritus from the University of California at Davis.

Dr. Madigan presented topics covering safe sedation, anesthesia and handling procedures on horses that are in crisis.
These crises include natural disasters, trailer accidents, and traumatic performance injuries.
He also provided very useful information about adjusting drug dosages for animals that are in shock and different dosages for
mules and donkeys.

In addition Dr. Madigan shared very interesting information about the use of some newer drugs in training horses for anxiety protocol and fear reduction.

We look forward to employing these techniques in daily practice and in disaster situations.

Greetings!

We are very excited to welcome our two new associate veterinarians into our practice!
Some may remember Dr. Farrahn ( O’ Hara) Olson when she was a student and completed two summer externships here.
She completed her veterinary studies in Glasgow, Scotland and has come on board to help provide care for large and small animal patients.
She and her husband Tanner are living in the Cottage Grove area.
Dr. Olson is glad to be back in the Pacific Northwest after being gone so long.

Dr. Jackson Shelton grew up in Florida and finished his veterinary degree in Dublin, Ireland.
His partner Erica is another Dublin graduate and is originally from the Roseburg area .
Dr. Shelton will be working in mixed animal practice and has special interest in equine dentistry.
He is quite the outdoorsman and is happily learning about Oregon and all that has to offer.

We are very appreciative of our clients who supported us the last two years as we were going through the long hard process of interviewing candidates to fill our positions.
We are confident that you all will be very pleased with Dr. Olson and Dr. Shelton and will quickly come to understand why we selected them to join us.

Dr. Olson and Dr. Shelton are already quite busy and are accepting new patients.

Kind regards,

Dr. Wes Violet and Dr. Kris Willaman

Greetings !

Many of our clients have expressed concern about the recent diagnosis of two neurologic EHV-1 cases in central Oregon that resulted in euthanasia.

This past weekend Dr. Violet attended a suspicious neurologic case involving a horse that had been purchased at auction in Junction City the weekend of 05/13.

Four days after purchase, the horse exhibited upper respiratory signs and neurologic symptoms including headshaking, ataxia, and limp tail tone.
No fever was ever documented.

It had been isolated in a small barn facility in the Mohawk area.
The owners were very cautious about preventing exposure to any other horses.
No other animals are symptomatic.

On Sunday the horse was referred to the Oregon State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital for further diagnostic work up and quarantine.
Thus far nasal swab testing and blood results are negative for EHV–1 confirmation.

More out-of-state horses are entering our immediate vicinity than ever .
Horse auctions and horse shows are likely locations for exposure to communicable diseases.

South Willamette Veterinary Clinic along with Boehringer- Ingelheim
will be hosting a webinar regarding EHV-1 via zoom format on Thursday, 05/26 at 6:30 PM.
Dr. Robert Keene will cover topics including disease description, control strategies, and vaccination programs.
Questions will be answered as time and format permits.
There is no cost or pre-registration, please click the link below to attend or dial the numbers listed based upon your current location!

With sad hearts we say goodbye to Dr. Anna Robledo and her family as they move to Portland.
Dr. Anna has been an invaluable associate for the last three years with us.
She had great skills in all species and exemplified the best as a mixed animal practitioner.
All while balancing life as a young mother and serving in the Oregon National Guard.
Incredible!

From Dr. Robledo.....

To my South Willamette family:

Just a little note to say thank you so very much for being a wonderful group of people
( friends! ) to work with.
I have loved working with you all - you have made me a smarter, more compassionate doctor and I am very grateful to have learned from each of you over the past several years.
You all hold a very special place in my heart and always will.

So long to Dr. Robledo, husband Dan, and precious daughter Ella.
We all wish you the very best !
