In the span of about two weeks, we have lost two horses. It is so difficult to share this news with you all - as there are so many of you that loved Rylee dearly. She was a beautiful Norwegian Fjord mare that caught everyone’s eyes with her unique coloring and flashy mane. She was generously donated to our program by Don and Sherrie Fischer in honor of their granddaughter, Rylee in 2018. Before she arrived on our farm, her name was Iduna Acres Tova and she lived in Michigan. She was a broodmare and had prior experience giving lessons to someone with a disability, so we knew that she’d fit in great at The Equestrian Therapy Program.

We think it is important to let everyone know that we strongly believe that the deaths of Peanut and Rylee were unrelated. The majority of our herd are in their 20s. As our horses grow older, new health problems arise and existing issues can worsen. When we noticed that Rylee’s condition was not improving, she was trailered to OSU’s Equine Hospital where their staff worked diligently to assess and treat her. Due to the unfavorable prognosis and the immense pain she was experiencing, she was euthanized. We are so thankful for our staff and the veterinary care teams that helped during this difficult time. We are also extremely grateful for the generous donors that help support our horses in times like these when they are in need of specialized veterinary care.

Earlier in the day before Rylee was taken to OSU, we had a rider out to the farm for a birthday ride. She recently turned 85 and her wish was to ride a horse again. Although she was not riding Rylee, she said something that has stuck with us. As we walked around the arena, she told us that she used to be a pastor and she wondered, “Are there horses in heaven?” which led us to wonder… How can it be heaven without horses? For those that share our love of horses, you know just how magical their presence can be. As we breathe in their scent, run our hand along their velvet nose, or listen to the sound of their hooves galloping across the pasture, we experience a little bit of that heaven here on earth. The smile of a new rider on Rylee’s back as they ran their hands along her “mohawk” mane was most definitely a little piece of that heaven.

Please keep all of us in your thoughts as we mourn the recent loss of Rylee and continue to mourn the loss of Peanut. We will forever be thankful for the time and hard work she gave to our program. Rest in peace, sweet girl.
