Splash Loft Farm & Apiary

Splash Loft Farm & Apiary Splash Loft Farm & Apiary Since the below was written we have moved one of our apiaries to Crisfield, located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

Splash Loft Farm & Apiary is a small 6 acre homestead straddling the historic Mason/Dixon line. We are members of the York County Beekeepers’ Association. Our primary goal is the nurturing of honey bees, helping to ensure honey bee survival. Eighteen colonies of bees live on the farm. Many colonies have been re-homed here after being evicted from homes. In June of 2013 we submitted an application

to Certified Naturally Grown and it was approve, we are now on our way to become a Certified Naturally Grown Apiary. Heritage and rare breeds of poultry such as Light Brahmas and French Marans are kept to offer the most delicious eggs you've ever eaten and to conserve these wonderful historic breeds. We are working along with the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy (www.albc-usa.org) to protect our Heritage breeds from extinction. We are offering handcrafted homemade soaps that contain all natural vegetable oils, herbs and essential oils. In 2010 we started with a small herd of Fallow Deer. In the fall of 2012 I started hand spinning local wool for my own use and to offer to the community when available. So, In 2013 we decided to keep a small flock of Registered Shetland Sheep and hand process our fleeces here on the farm. All vegetables, fruits and herbs are grown using organic and biodynamic gardening methods and will be offered when available. Because of our honey bee colonies no pesticides or chemicals are used!

This is what community support looks like for a small farm/business. Without the support of neighbors and other small local businesses it would not be as possible for Splash Loft Farm & Apiary to expand in Crisfield. Thank you to:
Cannonball Produce, M&C Vessey Farm, and all the individuals that stop by our apiary to purchase honey. Now we have to get to work building new boxes and honey frames! If anyone else is interested in carrying our honey we would love to talk to you. 😊

Thank you M&C Vessey Farm for supporting us!

I wanted to try this beautiful Lavender and Wild Violet jelly from Dorothy’s Fruits Of Foraging Jams and Jellies so bad yesterday but was too worn out to make my homemade biscuits then. This morning I was full of energy and this was my reward for all the work I did yesterday. When I put this beautiful and delicious jelly on the biscuit I just had to take it outside to try to capture its beautiful color. Photos do it no justice.

Bears love honey, and it isn't surprising that they go to extreme lengths to get some of it.

The idea is to let bees be bees.

By fall, bee colonies are supposed to have enough food stocked up to get through winter. But near soy farms, they’re turning to storage for sustenance as early as August, a new study finds.
