We have a breeder in VA that has pups ready for their new home in July!

We have a litter of beautiful Karakachan pups. Born 5/14 and ready to leave July 11. 3 females, 5 males. We have a potential new owner that is looking for information and possibly a pup in the Fall. Her info is and questions are below.

My name is Whitney and I was wondering if you might be able to connect me with a breeder that will have puppies available this fall. My boyfriend and I purchased a farm in western Maryland last year and will be getting sheep this summer. The land was left untended for about 30 years and there is high predator pressure (coyotes, bobcats, bears-there is one currently denned up on the property, hawks, etc). There is also no permanent fence. We will be building a fence around our field below the barn this summer and working on getting NRCS funding for the remaining perimeter fence.

I have worked on farms with LGDs before, mainly Great Pyrenees, but I visited a farm that had a Karakachan and I was very impressed by how smart and reserved he was. I preferred his attitude and work ethic to the Pyrenees I have worked with before.

I originally wanted to wait in getting a LGD because of our lack of permanent fence but, with the amount of predator pressure we have and we both work full time, I would feel better having a LGD in with our sheep while we are gone during the day and at night. We will be getting our sheep in July and will train them on electric poly net fence within the permanent paddock we are going to build. Then we will rotate them around the farm with the poly net. We plan on rotating them close to the house this summer so we can keep an eye on them. We have two dogs now (an English Shepherd and German Shepherd mix) and we plan on leaving them out at night to bark and deter predators but I don’t want to leave them in with the sheep.

I would like to get a LGD puppy in the fall so it can bond with the sheep over the winter and be big enough to be out with them during the summer. I was wondering if you have an advice or thoughts on our situation and if you know of a breeder that might have any puppies available around that time.

I was also wondering if you could give me advice on socializing my puppy with my other dogs. My other two dogs are currently in training for herding and will be working with the sheep but they will be sleeping inside during the winter and are working dogs but also pets. I want the Karakachan puppy to be comfortable around them so they won't fight but I don't want it to be so bonded with them that it wants to hang out at the house and not with the livestock. Any advice you could give me in this regard would be appreciated. I just want to prepare as much as possible so I can make sure we're ready for the addition of a LGD to the farm. We live in Maryland so I would prefer a breeder within reasonable driving distance. But I have family in TN so I would be willing to drive there. Thank you!
