It’s that time of year!!! The barn is full of elementary kids! My favorite part to be honest.
However, when you send your horse off to a c**t starter, I think there is some confusion about what you are paying for. First, everyone has different goals. Completely understandable. For that first 60/90 days. ( don’t even speak of 30, it’s just dumb for everyone) Maybe your goal is to ride them in Medora with your family this summer, maybe to send it to a specialist and go futurity, maybe you want to do lot of the training but that first ride just gives you nightmares, (understandable) maybe your goal is just to ride the thing this year. Remember though, that c**t starter is not just an insurance policy that you won’t end up in the hospital with a broken bone because the first ride didn’t go so well. Yeah, hopefully as a professional we are stickier than most, but that isn’t the job. Yet, time and time again it gets treated like that’s all it is, therefore should be cheap and quick.

Which is why it is a dying art.

We get asked all the time; how many rides will he have in 60 days? How long do you ride her every day? I can’t answer that. It isn’t a paid by the hour thing. It’s a feel thing. Sometimes Princess might be in the arena for 16 hours honestly, she might take many hours of sweat and hard core work, sometimes maybe I might put her away after 15 minutes. It cannot be said enough, horse training is a feel. Where does this feel come from? Yeah talent but gosh; years of work, years of learning, years of mistakes, of accomplishments, of tears, of frustrations, of sleepless nights. It’s knowing when to s***k on one, when to back off and just be quiet. When one needs to go outside and trot down the road, when it just isn’t ready to for a full arena just yet. It’s experience and guidance bottled up into an art that I can now put into your c**t. A pr***en that came in barely handled and turn him into something that can now be ridden, potential seen, and on his way to being a real member of society in just a couple months. That is what you are really paying for. If we say your c**t needs more time or give you advice on what do do with your young horse please please Listen. This is just the beginning of your horse’s education, most would argue the most important. We that like riding c**ts are here for the horse, or we would charge what we are really worth.

She was such a hard one to let leave the barn, but I’m so happy to watch the success Garrett and Leslie are having with Cheetah! I also cannot wait to see what her foals will do. I hope they are just a little crazy like her ;)

I’ve accidentally sold almost all my customers older show horses this year, that means I have been able to concentrate on all the many two year olds ( my favorite part) they are getting pretty darn broke.

Great job yesterday Flare and Kaitlyn!
4 out of 24 in the 50/50 Maturity in a mix of pros and amateurs, even with that pig they called a cow. Not a bad check for a days work. So proud of you ladies!

I took my self out of the game.

I took myself out of the game when I chose to breed my good horse, the only competitive horse I had.

I took myself out of the game when I chose to ride under someone and be behind the scenes to further my skill and education

I took myself out of the game when I sold everything I had except for an un-started 2 year old

I took myself out of the game when I decided to put my family first during a really difficult time

I took myself out of the game when I pursued a career. A career that for a year took up 98% of my time.

I took myself out of the game when I mentally couldn’t handle the dedication and commitment playing the game required.

I took myself out of the game for way longer than I planned to.

And the game goes on, whether you’re playing it or not. There will always be other players ready to take your spot the second you pull back on the reins.

The people that used to cheer for me no longer do, the friends that used to encourage me no longer find me worth their time, the people that used to say they missed seeing me, no longer care to see me show up.

But the thing about the game, is that IT NEVER STOPS. And the beautiful part of it all, is that you can always choose to play again.

You may have chosen to take yourself out of it, but you can always choose to put yourself back in.

Choose to play again. Choose to come back to it, to find your love for it again. It’s okay to take yourself out. It’s okay to water other gardens and play other games, sometimes you need to. Sometimes those things are more important.

But the cool thing about this particular game.. you can always choose to play again.

It may be scary and a little more lonely than what you remember, and there may be no one that cares that you’re there, but YOU care that you’re there. And your HORSE cares that your there. And that’s all that matters.

Choose to play again.
Choose to show up.
Choose to try.
Choose to be brave, and strong.
Choose to be excited to be back at the bottom. No expectations, a clean slate. Choose to love the journey, YOUR journey, because it made you who you are.
Choose to play the game to the best of your ability no matter what happens, no matter what people say, no matter who cares that you’re there, because the comeback is always stronger than the set back.

SOLD
Ruf Shock
2020 AQHA Gelding 14.3h
Not Ruf At All x CLF Electric Sparkle ( Jace Electric Spark)

Solid athletic gelding. Reiner, ranch rider, rides down the trail, been around cattle and bison, and been hauled all over the place.

Maximus is soft, handy and wants to work. He is a monster stopper, big turner and easy lead changer. This guy is a pretty mover to go along with it all and has a lot of power.

Ruf Shock has some NRHA earnings from some schooling classes and easy showings but hasn’t really ever been shown hard. As a trainers horse, I just just had too many customer horses that had to come first in the show pen. He sure has the ability to plus all his maneuvers though, and has done so at even half speed.

He has a sweet quirky personality, good ground manners, no vices. Clips, ties, loads. All the things well. Maximus does not have straight front legs, but is a gorgeous bodied gelding.
