Todays DOG OF THE DAY is my girl Ember- HR Westlake’s Set a Fire JH.

Ember
Age- 4
Favorite snack- chick fil a
Favorite pastime- training and hunting and training some more.

For Em’s fun fact I’ll share my words in regards to her name. Naming dogs is a BIG deal to me and maybe a little too sentimental, but my oh my how Ember has lived up to her name.

Ember Explained
I love this name for two reasons, it has a dual meaning to me. Reason number one is the praise and worship song “Set a Fire”. If you haven’t listened to it take a few minutes to. As some of you may know the dogs have shown and taught me so much about Jesus and I truly feel that they are my passion for a reason. They have helped me through some anxiety battles and continue to remind me to seek His Joy daily. Hank with Kingdom dog ministries is who I got my first dog from. He has been an instrumental part of my dog journey and is who first connected the dots between scripture and animals (dogs specifically) to me, I have never been able to overlook it since. The second reason behind her name is because of my dear friend Scotty, this is where the “Westlake” part of the name comes from. Scotty used to breed, raise and train Labradors and her kennel was called Westlake. This puppy was specifically chosen because she is a granddaughter of Scotty’s dog who started it all, Tipsy. Tipsy had two litters of awesome puppies. One puppy of hers in particular has caught my eye since I knew he existed and his name is Chief. He has accomplished so much in the competition world but also enjoys just duck hunting with his owner. I wanted a puppy from this bloodline specifically to carry on the great legacy Scotty started. I also wanted a pup who would take it down a notch and just hang at home. This puppy’s mother is an accomplished competitor but is also a household pet, Annie. The “set a fire”part of the name comes from the song and the Lord using my passion to draw me closer to him but it is also significant because Scotty definitely fueled the fire that was in my soul with the dogs. When “battles” with the dogs (*Jen*) arose she kept the fire going. The song is a powerful song about asking the Lord to set a fire in your soul that won’t go out. I hope if you’ve read this far you will listen to this song and pray the Lord shows you or fuels what sets your soul on fire and draws you closer to him.

An Ember is by definition a small piece of glowing coal in a dying fire. She will be my constant reminder to never let the fire and passion for the Lord and what brings you joy die out.

Todays DOG OF THE DAY is my old guy Luke.

The guy who started it all in the gundog world for me, and introduced me to some of my most favorite people, and my favorite pastime. This guy is getting old so quickly. He is with “the boys” for what will be his last hunting weekend trip. It’s so bittersweet. He has earned every ounce of retirement and FAR exceeded every expectation I had for him as my first gundog. I hope we can keep him happy and comfortable for a few more years, but we will listen to him.

Luke
Age- almost 11
Favorite snack- anything in a cellophane wrapper in the duck blind or just food in general
Favorite pastime- boat rides, ducks and sunbathing

But ask the animals and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky and they will tell you. Job 12:7

Fun fact- Luke’s half brother is my current puppies dad. Luke came from Kingdom Dog Ministries and if you’ve never heard of them- PLEASE check them out. Luke was started by Run-N-Gun Retrievers and Nick did a FANTASTIC job shaping Luke into everyone’s favorite buddy in the blind.

This made me chuckle. But in all seriousness- we are as prepared as can be to keep your pups safe and warm. Praying we keep electricity for everyone’s sake but we do have backup generators if needed.

🏡😂🥶❄️
If you are new to Texas, we are about to experience “Texas Winter”. This is 6 or 7 days of cold, maybe some ice and snow. The weatherman will threaten snow. It may snow, it may not and if the weatherman says 2 inches it could be 10 or it could be 1/2”. It doesn’t matter how much snow it is, we’ll all freak out because we don’t see snow often.

Schools will close, be prepared for the kids to have 1-2 days off after just going back from Christmas break.

The threat of snow (or ice) is your prompt to head to the grocery store and buy milk, eggs, toilet paper and bread. It doesn’t matter if you need these items. It’s just what we do. Everyone in town will be there. Hoard away!

You’ll also need to make a mad dash for faucet covers and finding them and getting out of the store will be like an episode of the hunger games. You’re in the redneck district.

Don’t look for a sled. You won’t find one. In the rare chance we get enough ice or snow to sled grab some cardboard or a trash can lid and go find the nearest hill. Yes, we know it’s not a hill. You live in the flatland, just go with it. You’ll be alarmed by the fact that you’re “sledding” towards a bar ditch, fence or maybe into a farm to market road.

Just go with it.
You’ll be fine.

We don’t have equipment to handle the winter and weather. The roads will be a mess and even though the state has been telling you for a week they’re ready, they’re not and it won’t work. Just stay home if you can and if you can’t just come to terms with the fact that nobody here knows how to drive in snow and ice.

Whatever you do, DO NOT talk about snow tires.

If you happen to slide off the road or get stuck, turn your flashers on, take a deep breath and wait. Two guys in a four wheel drive truck will be along in no time to offer assistance. Don’t try to help them, they live for this stuff, and will do what they can to get you back on the road. If either one of them screams “hey y’all watch this” just get back and get your phone out and start recording, you’ll probably have a viral video.

Also of note, when they offer you beer and deer sticks, don’t be rude, take them and smile.

No matter what you do, don’t talk about how they did it back home in any of these scenarios.

Nobody cares.

You live in Texas now.

Texans know they live in the greatest state in the country and it’s our way or the highway.

When we act like we’re going to die and start to complain about the 7 days of winter just shut up, we’re serious and we don’t care how much you love it.

We don’t.

You’ll be back in shorts and flip flops in a week to ten days and it’ll be nice until right around Easter.

Texas “second winter” will be 2 or 3 days and will hit right around Easter, usually the week before or the week after. This will hit right around the time you plant flowers and a garden.

We know you’re not from around here when we see you’ve planted flowers before Easter and before the “second winter” has hit.

This is why all the people at the nursery don’t sound like us when you’re shopping for plants.

We know better.

During second winter it’ll go from 70 to 25 and you’ll experience all four seasons in one day.

This too shall pass, get used to it and when second winter is over you can enjoy the 3-4 weeks of “spring” before summer gets here and it’ll be melt your face off hot until sometime around Halloween.

Hello!!

We are excited to be putting together a list of our favorite products to sell at the kennel. I want to make sure there is interest and that we can price products to make sense for both you and us.

One thing I would love to gauge interest on is dog food.

I have recently switched my gang to Inukshuk Marine 16. I love that this food is corn, wheat and soy FREE. Full of ocean sourced protein and loaded with omegas!

The switch at my house has helped 2 sensitive belly’s (one dogs poo is looking better than ever) and I’m already seeing positive changes in skin.

This food is PRICEY- especially when I’m feeding 7 dogs but ordering it wholesale provides a great price break that I could pass on to you when compared to ordering from online places.

If you would be interested at all please let me know in the comments or send me a PM.

If there are any other products or recommendations you would like to hear about from us please let me know as I work to gather some more greatness here at the kennel.

Happy New Year!!

We are excited to announce we are now offering Daycare packages and have done a daycare price drop! We hope that this will allow more dogs to visit us during the week to become acclimated with the kennel. We notice that daycare dogs are less anxious while boarding, and love learning the routine of the kennel. It also gives them a chance to blow off some steam while you are away or at work! Check out the website for more info and to see our daycare and boarding add-on options!

We look forward to a few more exciting things coming your way this year!

Sharing this again this year because, it is that time.

Friends--- please be aware of your dog's health. If they are sneezing or coughing they are not permitted in the kennel. We do everything in our power from daily sanitizing procedures, to air flow and filtration practices to keep everyone healthy. Kennel cough includes MANY strains of respiratory upset and is SO very common. Bordetella may help, but needs to be administered at least 10 days before coming. Just like in people, colds spread quickly and vaccines do not guarantee immunity. If your dog comes in and is or starts coughing, or showing symptoms it will have to be picked up ASAP!

Secondly- PLEASE check in with ONLY A HUMAN, then you can get your pups when the office is clear.

Thanks for helping us keep everyone safe and healthy!
