Today’s vet visit was so insane that I didn’t even have time to take photos or videos, so a huge shout out to my team for capturing some epic moments ❤️

As I mentioned last week, preparing for the day was a logistical hell, but I’m INSANELY proud to say that we pulled off our “Option A” plan (which was the most complex, but the one we were all hoping to accomplish) with flying colors and time to spare! And that was with a couple of unexpected obstacles! 🥰💪

Needless to say, it was another incredible day and I’m so proud of this amazing team!

For photo context:

- Dr. Gonzales doing an oral exam right before we reverse from sedation
- Me and Vet Tech Ashley waiting for blood results on Aleu, who did not require sedation for her care (though you’ll see me using a Y-Pole for safety)
- The teeth on high-content wolfdog Brienne, who is our oldest rescue and will be turning 18 next month. (As you can tell, the years have worn her teeth down HEAVILY, which is why she receives thawed meals and no bones, and has annual checkups like this one! And rest assured, despite her lack of teeth, she still functions completely normally and lives a high quality life! ❤️)
- Rachel teaching Dr. G and I how to use our field scale as we weigh our largest wolfdog, Irwin, who came in at 100 lbs, making him one of our heaviest as well (though with a normal Body Condition Score!)🥰

The pups had so much fun playing and running around! Maeve and Faelen are really finding their groove playing together, and it’s such a joy to watch 💗

Finding remote, quiet, peaceful places like this is challenging (especially as we live in very crowded Southern California), but so important and rewarding. Seeing the pups run and play freely and uninterrupted by other people and dogs (for which we always leash up until they pass) makes the days of planning and hours of driving to these spots so worth it.

It can be very stressful having big, active, high maintenance dogs in a non-rural environment. Yes, they have a decently sized backyard/containment to hang out in and play (an absolutely requirement), but that’s not nearly enough for them. They need exercise and mental stimulation every day, usually multiple times per day. When they aren’t actively sleeping, they generally need/want sometime from me, whether that be interaction, exercise, feeding, or play!

These guys are truly a lifestyle choice, and dictate every second of my free time. Many people see and want northern breeds/wolfdogs because they’re beautiful and engaging. However, it’s absolutely crucial to accept and want them not for their looks, but for the lifestyle and activities they come with too! Getting any dog based on looks alone is a terrible mistake. However, getting these types of dogs based on just looks will almost invariably result in an unhappy (and shocked) owner, and disaster for the dog once they’re no longer wanted due to their extreme maintenance requirements and quirky personality. In short, do your research and get experience with any breed before deciding it’s for you!!

Draco is one of our largest animals here at the sanctuary, and with some of the most massive teeth. Sadly, since he also has a malocclusion in the form of an underbite, those giant canines have caused some wearing down of certain areas along his gums to either side of them. It quite literally looks like teeth are missing from those spots because of his large the “gaps” are, which can be appreciated in this first photo.

Thankfully he is still in excellent shape despite this issue, and his chompers still work perfectly fine. 🥰

When Draco was all done being seen today, intern Logan was able to learn how to administer an intramuscular reversal by watching staff member Austin, then practicing on the next animal that was seen!

Kitana is a mid-content wolfdog and has one of the most beautiful howls at the sanctuary.
For anyone curious, they are all born and raised in captivity, meaning they have never been wild, are acclimated to and rely upon humans, and do not have the skills or knowledge to survive in the wild. Additionally, as wolfdogs, these kids are legally considered domestic dogs, further cementing that they cannot be released.
Oftentimes, their options are sanctuary placement or death. The purpose ot a sanctuary is to provide them a safe space to live and call "home."

Pre-bedtime fight club 🐺👊😂

These two love wrestling on the giant doggy bed, and their favorite game is MY BLANKET.
Maeve specializes in flopping over and freezing while Faelen chews on her, while Faelen loves to ram her with the top of his head and do a partial somersault on top of her 😂
Fascinating behavior,

Sunset songs🌞🎵

Here Faelen and Maeve show off how wolves and wolfdogs will often change their pitch mid-howl, unlike the long low beautiful howls they're more known for. These more varied (and definitely more screechy!) howls are a territorial mechanism, sounding from far away as if there are many more wolves around than there truly are.
In this video, Faelen and Maeve were actually responding to the territorial barking of a coyote in the distance- safe to say, I think the coyote got a bit of a surprise!
Speaking of coyotes, they're also very adept at varying their vocalizations and "throwing" their voices- this often makes a group of 3 coyotes in the woods behind your house sound like a pack of at least 10... while this vocalization strategy can be very effective at intimidating rivals near their territory, it also has the side effect of misleading humans into believing there's a much larger population out there than there truly is.

Happy Father’s Day, to both human and canine fathers!

Here are Faelen’s and Maeve’s dad’s next to them- Faelen especially takes after his dad so much, in size and build. It’ll be interesting to see how Maeve grows and takes after each parent (the last slide are Faelen and Maeve’s mothers cause I know you guys will be curious to see them too!) 🥰

Faelen’s dad is a mid content, 65% wolf, with malamute, German Shepherd, and husky. Maeve’s dad is a very high content Wolfdog, about 95% wolf with traces of malamute. Both are quite large at about 130 lbs, and both are very heavyset for a Wolfdog due to significant tundra wolf subspecies influence! Faelen certainly inherited his dad’s size, we’ll see about Maeve... 🐾🖤

Faelen the forest king... 🖤🌲🍃👑

While Maeve certainly gets a lot of the limelight these days, don’t be mistaken; Faelen is still my boy, and my world. He’ll always be my first, sweet, sensitive, goofy, majestic, magical baby.

I’ll be honest, I was nervous before Maeve came. I didn’t know how it would work with two of them. I was scared that loving her too would diminish my bond with Faelen. However, now I know... my love for them isn’t a finite resource. Rather than Maeve taking up some of Faelen’s space in my heart and in my life, it seems she simply expanded it and made more room for love of her own 💗

Maeve and her friend

These two are the sweetest girls ever🥰, and both absolutely adore people. Nova is naturally confident yet submissive to other dogs, while Maeve is extremely bold and dominant (she will literally steal Nova’s food right under her nose)! It will be interesting to see how their dynamic plays out as Maeve matures.

Both these ladies are very high content female wolfdogs, which aren’t famous for getting along together long term. However, Nova met Maeve as a young pup, and by meeting up very often and allowing them to “stay in touch,” we’re hoping they’ll remain good together, and enjoy hikes and activities for a long time to come!

I like to take Maeve solo to play with Nova here for several reasons:
First, having Faelen there as well changes the dynamic and things become more political and less playful. Nova is very submissive to Faelen and is busier trying to appease him rather than interacting with Maeve. Faelen also feels the need to dictate the situation, and is bossy when it comes to Maeve playing with Nova.

Second, it’s important for Maeve to have time away from Faelen, especially when learning to interact with other canines, to develop her own social skills and confidence. While it seems mean to leave Faelen behind, it’s so important for Maeve’s development and well worth the temporary guilt I feel. Once Faelen and Nova’s hormones settle a bit at the end of winter, they’ll have plenty of playdates too!
