A loss this great has me beside myself , speechless, all I know to say is Sky Mcspadden was perfect, he loved me so much, he was generous and caring, he straight up saved me, he was my everything and I so looked forward to growing old with him and starting a family. And I’d give anything to have him back.

* Bringing this post out of the vault, because it’s so important * 👇🏻

I think it’s common to think that when our dog is unruly, there is something wrong with them.

Especially when we look around us and see perfectly behaved pups strolling happily down the street with their owners.

But the truth is…

Everything your dog does is NORMAL.

Chewing…

Digging…

Barking…

Pulling on the lead…

Lunging at other dogs or joggers…

Growling…

It’s all NORMAL.

This is  a normal response for a predator (because that’s what dogs once were) that got plucked out of their natural environment and dropped onto your sofa.

What’s not normal?

Walking on a leash at a mind numbingly slow pace as you stare at your phone…

NOT chewing things, or mouthing you…

Holding a sit stay or a down stay as you chat to a friend…

NOT losing their mind around another dog.

Sure selective breeding has curbed some of the more natural responses our dogs have…

But the truth is…

Your dog’s behavior is a NORMAL response to them trying to adapt to an environment that truthfully is NOT normal for them.

So tell me…

What does that shift for you?

Because your dog isn’t “Bad”. There’s nothing wrong with them. Everything they are doing is completely normal.

Why we stress not over exercising your puppies. Bones don't come together until they are between 18 and 24 months old.

When you finally welcome your 8 week old puppies, please keep this picture in mind. Their bones aren’t even touching yet. They walk so beautifully with big, flexible legs and bench movements because their joints are made up entirely of cartilage, muscles, tendons and ligaments covered with skin. Nothing is well adjusted or has real grip yet.

When you make them run excessively or don't limit their exercise to prevent them from overdoing during that time, you're not giving them the chance to grow properly. Every big jump or bounce and excited run creates bone-breaking impacts.
In reasonable quantities, this is not problematic and normal wear and tear will do.

But when you let the puppy jump off the couch or bed, take him for long walks, you damage this joint in training. When you let the puppy move on slippery tiles, you damage the joint.

You only get once to make them grow up. A well built body is something that comes from excellent upbringing and good education. BOTH , not just one

Once you’re an adult, you’ll have the rest of your life to spend playing and engaging in high-impact exercises. So keep him calm while he is still young and give him the gift that can only be given once.

Management is something every trainer I know talks about - it’s one of the first conversations I have with clients. Baby gates, x-pens, leash tethers, the list goes on…

I’ve always thought I was good at finding adaptive solutions but today I walked into a lesson and was blown away by the genius of my client! Their dog is a big boy who loves to counter surf, but also struggles with being confined.

Look at this beautiful AND creative solution they came up with! This is a portable ping pong net 🤯 I am so in love with this and was so impressed with their ingenious idea.

You can find them on Amazon - get one while you can because I think this is gonna be a new trend 😂

Another dog who is seeing the bright side of outings and meeting strangers thanks to a great behavior modification plan! So proud of Margot and her success. She’s socially selective, which I love because I get it, I am too! I keep my circle small, and it’s more joyful and peaceful 😌 She is starting to feel more comfortable and confident in social situations and it helps when people ask to pet 😇

The fact that I am even here writing this post is....disappointing to say the least. But, here we go.

I honestly don't understand the reason behind someone choosing to make "barking" sounds towards an animal, especially one that is already barking, but it is apparently a thing that some folks do.

Barking at a dog can be startling. It can be intimidating, or downright frightening. Barking at a dog that is already barking at you (perhaps this dog is worried about your presence) will likely increase that dog's worry about you and strangers encountered in the future.
"Barking" at a dog, to me, sounds like screaming at a toddler that is having a meltdown; it's not helping anybody.
Not the baby, not the parent, not the dog, not the guardian - I can't fathom how it might be helping you?

If a dog barks at you, give it space. Don't purposefully engage with it or provoke it. Let's not make a mockery of an animal's emotions, just because we feel like we can.

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk....

Meet our newest graduate, Theo! 🤩 Theo is a remarkable puppy! Smart as a whip and cuter than a button, Kristal knew that she wanted to do Puppy Start Right with Theo to prevent any unwanted behaviors from cropping up before they even start! Theo has learned so many cues and behaviors that will help him and his family understand each other more and started puppyhood off on the right paw! I look forward to seeing Theo grow up and love that our puppies can be friends!

🤓🐶 Pro tip! Getting a puppy into my training program is so important! (Not just for preventing behavior problems, even more importantly, is proper socialization which is critical to their overall development.) Training should begin as soon as you get your puppy home and I even do consultations before your puppy arrives!

Secrets of a Pet Dog Trainer

1. Puppy teeth just don't hurt us anymore, but we pretend it's awful just to make clients feel heard

2. Pockets are life. Clothes without pockets are pointless, you may as well go to work naked.

3. No, we are not like The Dog Whisperer. No, we do not love Cesar Milan. But we get asked at every party anyway.

4. We don't know where, but somewhere in our house or van is a handful of meat slowly rotting away

5. We rarely eat meals at your standard breakfast, lunch, dinner times. Most food is consumed in the van between sessions because we can prep DIY raw dog food til the cows come home but our own food....na

6. We can't drive past a "Land for Sale" sign without looking up the price on RightMove before remembering we've already spent all our money on our dogs

7. We hear "do you train husbands too?" and/or "I suppose you're a people trainer more than a dog trainer really aren't you?" every single day of our lives but we smile back every time.

8. Our garages, sheds and outhouses are ram-packed with random bits of equipment and other assorted junk pretending to be equipment, just in case we ever need a broken A-frame and 506 tennis balls to fix someone's dog

9. No matter how qualified & experienced you become, you will always be mansplained how to do your job by an old man in the park who's had German Shepherds his whole life.

10. For all the poo, wee, blood, saliva, sweat and tears we wouldn't have it any other way and most of us feel lucky to wake up in the morning and actually be excited about going to work.
