What makes the Longhorned tick so prolific is that it is able to overwinter in our climate and the female tick is able to reproduce and lay fertile eggs without a male tick. The tick has been found on pets, livestock, wildlife and people.
When the tick larvae emerge from their eggs they are stimulated to move toward a warm vertebrate host by body temperature and probably exhaled carbon dioxide. A blood meal is required for progression to the next life stage. Learn more about these invaders by clicking through to our most recent article.

February is dental health month!
I would like to share with you a patient that demonstrated perfectly why dental x-rays are so essential in kitties. Let's call our kitty 'Oreo' (not his real name).
Oreo came to us recently for a dental cleaning and externally the teeth didn't look too bad.
This is a photo of the lower canine tooth after the cleaning. There is a small enamel defect that needed to be investigated further but no pain or gingival pockets.
See additional images in the comments to follow Oreo's story.

We have been receiving numerous calls asking when we will be allowed to have clients back in the building since the COVID vaccine is now available to healthcare workers. Although veterinarians and their staff are considered essential healthcare workers in almost every other respect we are NOT yet eligible for the COVID vaccine and are still under state mandate to provide healthcare exclusively with curbside service.
The good news is that curbside service has made it possible to provide healthcare to our patients in a way that is safe for both our staff and our clients. The bad news is that it is working so well that our vaccine priority has been repeatedly delayed. We were first told we would be in the second phase of 1a. Then we were told we would be the first phase of 1b. Now our place in line has been delayed again and we have no clear indication whether we will be able to get the vaccine before the general public.
We will continue to provide our patients with the compassionate care you expect and we will let you know when we are able to once again resume in-person service.
We look forward to seeing you all face-to-face again!
