We got you, good Buddy.

A customer alerted Bay Country Veterinary Hospital in Crownsville that someone had left a carrier with a cat outside their office. In addition to this handsome fellow, the carrier included two cans of cat food and an envelope inscribed with "My name is Buddy." Inside was $20 cash and a handwritten note that said:

"His name is Buddy. He's been neutered. He's around 11 years old. He's never been outside. Gentle and doesn't scratch things. My wife died and I can't take care of him anymore. He's a good cat."

Buddy, as the law requires, was transferred to Anne Arundel County Animal Care & Control, where a volunteer who gave him a thorough brushing, clipped his nails and took his photos confirmed that he is indeed a good cat.

Applications for Buddy, who weighs 15.2 pounds, are being accepted immediately. Adoption fees continue to be waived for all the shelter's many pets — each of whom was also once upon a time someone's buddy.

At home dental care is the most effective thing you can do as a pet owner to maintain your pet's dental health. The link below lists items approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) for home dental care, including dental diets, chews, water additives, and more.

According to the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC), over 5,000 pets have tested positive for lyme disease in Maryland this year already. Lyme disease is transmitted by ticks, and can cause some potentially serious health issues. That's why we recommend monthly flea/tick prevention, year-round.

Thinking about adopting a pet? Here are some tips to help you prepare:

Assess Your Lifestyle: Consider your daily routine, activity level, and living situation. Different pets have different needs, so choose one that fits your lifestyle.

Research Breeds: If you have a specific breed in mind, research its temperament, exercise needs, and potential health issues. Mixed breeds can also make wonderful pets with diverse traits.

Prepare Your Home: Make your home pet-friendly. Remove hazards, and set up a comfortable space with essentials like a bed, food, water, and toys.

Budget for Expenses: Pets come with costs, including food, veterinary care, grooming, and supplies. Make sure you're financially prepared for both routine and unexpected expenses.

Consider Adoption: Shelters and rescue organizations have many wonderful animals looking for homes. Adopting from them can save a life and give a pet a second chance.

Meet the Pet First: Spend time with the pet before making a decision. Ensure you feel a connection and that the pet's personality fits your family.

Plan for Training: Training is crucial for a well-behaved pet. Be ready to invest time in teaching commands and socializing your new companion.

Prepare for a Commitment: Pets are a long-term commitment, often requiring care and attention for many years. Ensure you're ready for this responsibility.

Adopting a pet can bring immense joy and companionship. Take your time to make a thoughtful decision, and you'll find a loyal friend who enriches your life! 🐾❤️
