Dream Riders, Not-For-Profit Dream Riders offers physical, occupational, and speech therapy services using equine assisted techniques in a natural environment. www.dreamriderstlc.com

We are a 501c3 Not for Profit facility dedicated to providing services that benefit the whole family. Midwest Center provides therapy for children to address physical, sensory and social concerns, using a variety of treatments and therapeutic tools. Programs offered at the center include physical, occupational and speech therapies, and therapeutic riding lessons.

Time to learn about another position we use a lot at Dream Riders:

Prone Over Barrel of Horse, Head Inverted (POBI)
The patient is balanced in a prone position (on their stomach) over the barrel of the horse, perpendicular to the body of the horse, with the patient's head inverting.

  *   Provides strong vestibular input. With the head inverted, all three of the semicircular canals are stimulated providing a regulation of the vestibular and neurological systems.
  *   Increases pathways to the brain (neuroplasticity) for proper developmental sequencing.

  *   Benefits patients with gravitational insecurity.
  *   Relaxation of spastic muscles; particularly the hamstrings.
  *   Assists in head and neck control.
  *   Provides a flexion position for patients that move in extension pattern.
  *   Increased awareness of core musculature for improved phonation and respiration.
  *   Facilitates lingual and tongue protrusion with gravity assistance.

Time to learn another position and its benefits that we use here at Dream Riders:

Sitting Backwards
The patient sits backwards, facing the tail.

  *   Facilitates an anterior pelvic tilt and thoracic extension. This is beneficial for those with poor posture. The wither of the horse provides facilitation of the pelvis.
  *   Alters typical sitting sensory input.
  *   Brings eyes to midline (encourages convergence) because of visual stimuli of moving backwards.
  *   Increases ocular musculature activation.
  *   Stimulates auditory and visual comprehension and recall.
  *   Increases jaw grading and closure which facilitates lingual disassociation.
  *   Increased rhythm and fluency for speech and language.

What is hippotherapy? What is the purpose of the different positions? Let's look at one of the many positions we utilize to help reach our functional goals for the kiddos:

SUPINE

The patient is supine (on their back), head on the rump, and parallel to the body of the horse.

* Provides strong vestibular and proprioceptive input.
* Facilitates dynamic head to toe connection.
* Facilitates midline orientation and weight shift across midline.
* Provides total contact/weight bearing to extensor surface of trunk and pelvis.
* Facilitates supine equilibrium responses.
* Encourages elongation of pectorals and rib cage expansion.
* Relaxation of spastic muscles; particularly hip flexors.
* Facilitates swallow responses.
* Facilitates velar (k, g) and liquid (r) sounds due to gravity assistance.
