Fireworks may be fun for us, but they are terrifying for many animals. They are loud, unpredictable and horrifying to our furry friends. We see the aftermath, and it’s absolutely heartbreaking to witness the fear, confusion and distress that these animals experience.

Every year, shelters fill up with lost, scared and traumatized pets who bolted in panic. Every single year we see dogs with scraped paws and bloody noses from trying to escape. We see dogs trembling in fear wondering what happened. We see pets still wearing collars and pets without collars. We see owners frantically searching for their pet and not finding them at the shelter because some don’t make it to us at all. Please be proactive and protect your pets. They are depending on you.

Please take this seriously:

- Keep your pets indoors even if they’ve “never run off before.”
- Make sure they are wearing a secure collar and up-to-date ID
tags even if you have to make one.
- Play calming music or white noise to help drown out the noise.
- Talk to your vet about anxiety meds or calming aids. They truly
help.
- If you have outdoor animals, bring them in. Don’t leave them to
face the noise alone.

We do our best to comfort them and try to piece them back together in hopes that their owner will come forward. However, the Fourth of July holiday season is challenging and heartbreaking when we see so many that are frightened and lost.

Please help us by keeping your animals safe. Please share to as many people as you can. You will see this post more than once as we approach the holiday to remind everyone.
