Momma Mia and Her Miracle Pup

On July 29 Mia was found abandoned at an apartment building with her six newborn puppies just days old. Despite her own uncertain situation, Mia was doing everything she could to keep her tiny family safe, fed and protected. Once in our care, with nutritious food, vitamins and love from our staff, things looked hopeful at first. The puppies were nursing, and we believed this little family had a good chance.

Then, without warning, the heartbreak began. One by one, the puppies started to decline. Dr. Melanie’s expert opinion was that Mia carried a canine herpes virus. While it doesn’t affect the mother, it is often fatal to newborn puppies. The result was Fading Puppy Syndrome, and in a matter of days, we lost five of the six pups.

The devastation our staff felt is hard to put into words. These fragile lives were deeply loved, and their loss weighed heavy on all of us. But in the middle of the sadness, a little miracle remained.

Sam, a strong little boy, fought through the odds. Today, at six weeks old, he’s thriving, eating wet puppy food, dewormed, and already received his first puppy vaccination. If all continues well, he’ll be ready for adoption when he turns eight weeks old.

Mia, too, is doing wonderfully. She loves to run and play, can’t get enough of playing fetch and is a happy girl. Once spayed, this brave momma will be ready to find the forever home she so deserves.

Even though the outcome wasn’t what we hoped for, we take comfort knowing that Mia and her puppies were not abandoned to suffer alone. They were cared for, cherished, and loved at the shelter. And now, Mia and Sam carry forward as reminders that even in heartbreak miracles can happen.

Missing dog - Sullivan, MO area

My dog bolted during the storm last night (9/3). Her name is Taffy. We’re about 2 miles out from the old trading post on Highway H. We just got her from the Cuba animal Pound about a week and a half ago so she’s really unfamiliar with the area. She’s small only weighing 20 # and is 2 y/o.

The past couple of months have been trying for our shelter family. Three of our cats came down with a highly contagious upper respiratory infection. Their care required constant monitoring, rounds of medications and strict precautions to protect the other animals.

Through it all, our staff never wavered. Animal Care Attendants Caity Zweifel and Sarah Butler both bringing prior work experience with cases like this, were nothing short of amazing. Their knowledge, patience and dedication carried us through, and they taught the rest of us so much along the way. We are also deeply grateful to Cuba Vet Clinic for their guidance and mentorship as these cats worked toward recovery.

We could not have done it without our supporters. The donations we received during this time covered ALL medical costs and gave these cats the chance to heal. Every donation to Partners for the Cuba Pound makes a very real difference in the lives of the animals we serve and this chapter is a testament to that.

And today, after 90 long days in the shelter, we finally got to celebrate. All three cats have been officially released for adoption and each one already had a loving home waiting. Best friends Shiloh and Anchovy went home together with their very patient new mom while Sheba is off to begin her healthy new life with her proud new dad.

What began as a period of worry, ended in pure joy. These are the moments that remind us why we do what we do, and why we are so grateful for everyone who helps us along the way.

A huge thank you to 2DOGZDEALZ for your wonderful donation.
On their final day before closing, Needful Things Thrift Shop chose not to hold a simple going-out of-business sale.

Instead, they generously gave away their remaining inventory and invited donations to benefit the shelter. Because of their kindness, and the support of the community, they were able to present us with a cashier's check for $536.00.

This generous gift will go a long way in helping the animals in our care find happy, healthy new beginnings. We are so grateful to everyone who made this possible, and we promise to put every dollar to good use.

Meet Freya. She is a sweet and gentle girl looking for her forever home. 💕

Freya is about 3 years old, weighs just over 10 pounds, and has the most adorable bob tail that gives her a Maine C**n look. She’s a quiet, affectionate cat who loves being petted but prefers to keep her paws on the ground rather than being picked up.

Her life took a sad turn when her only owner moved away and left her behind, along with her feline friend Tux (also available for adoption).

Despite that, Freya’s loving personality still shines through. She’s spayed, up to date on vaccinations, and ready to bring comfort and companionship to a new family.

Come meet this beautiful ball of fur! We’re open Monday–Saturday, 9–3.
