🐾 Training Tip Tuesday: The Power of Consistency 🐾

When training your Collie puppy (or any dog), consistency is key! These intelligent pups thrive on routine and clear communication. Here are a few tips to keep your training on track:

1️⃣ Use the Same Cues: Always use the same words and hand signals for commands. For example, “sit” should always mean “sit” — no variations!
2️⃣ Short & Sweet Sessions: Puppies have short attention spans. Keep training sessions to 5–10 minutes to keep them engaged.
3️⃣ Positive Reinforcement: Reward good behavior with treats, praise, or playtime. Collies love to please, and they’ll repeat actions that earn your approval.
4️⃣ Be Patient: Mistakes happen! Focus on celebrating progress rather than perfection.

✨ Remember, training builds a strong bond between you and your Collie, and it’s a great way to help them use their natural intelligence and energy.

It’s not just the obvious cautions—like splintering roasted turkey bones or toxic onion-filled stuffing—that are unsafe choices for your dogs. There are other known foods that are toxic to dogs and should be kept off their plates. That said, plenty of fall favorite foods can be tasty and safe options in small portions during holiday festivities.

When you get your 8 week old puppies, please keep these images in mind. Their bones do not even touch yet. They plod around so cutely with big floppy paws and wobbly movement because their joints are entirely made up of muscle, tendons, ligaments with skin covering. Nothing is fitting tightly together or has a true socket yet.

When you run them excessively or don't restrict their exercise to stop them from overdoing it during this period you don't give them a chance to grow properly. Every big jump or excited bouncing run causes impacts between the bones. In reasonable amounts this is not problematic and is the normal wear and tear that every animal will engage in.

When you're letting your puppy jump up and down off the lounge or bed, take them for long walks/hikes, you are damaging that forming joint. When you let the puppy scramble on tile with no traction you are damaging the joint.

You only get the chance to grow them once. A well built body is something that comes from excellent breeding and a great upbringing-BOTH, not just one.

Once grown you will have the rest of their life to spend playing and engaging in higher impact exercise. So keep it calm while they're still little baby puppies and give the gift that can only be given once.

Why I Feed My Dogs pawTree and Recommend It for My Puppies 🐾

One of the most important things to me as a breeder is making sure every puppy that leaves Highland Moor Kennel is set up for a healthy, happy life. That’s why I choose to feed all my Rough Collies pawTree. I’ve seen firsthand the difference it makes in their overall health—from shiny coats to strong digestion.

When I ask my puppy families to continue feeding pawTree, it’s because I truly believe it’s the best for them. It’s my way of ensuring the pups you bring home stay as healthy as they were when they left me. I wouldn’t recommend it if I didn’t see the results every day in my own dogs.

Have you noticed paw licking, itching, ear issues, diarrhea, vomiting, dull coats, dry skin, or hot spots? These can all be signs of underlying issues, and nutrition plays a huge role in addressing them. PSA: When looking for a breeder look for transparency. Trust your instincts. Do not feel bad asking questions or being asked questions. In the social media day and age dig up all you can. You better believe if we sold you a puppy I had my nose in your page before I even replied to you 😉 make sure you look into breeders pages. Personal or business.
