Now that you know how to remove a tick on your dog, here’s what you don’t want to do …

❌ DON’T … remove ticks with your fingers. If you must, use a tissue and disinfect your hands to remove tick saliva or blood. And don’t forget to clean the bite area on your dog.
❌ DON’T … squish or crush a tick. This can force infected body fluids into your dog.
❌ DON’T … worry if the mouthpart of the tick stays in your dog’s skin. It’s a bit like having a splinter and it will fall out in a few days.
❌ DON’T … use nail polish, vaseline or repellents to try to suffocate or kill the tick. This can cause the tick to vomit into your dog.
❌ DON’T … burn the tick with a lighted cigarette or match. These can also cause vomiting.
❌ DON’T … throw the live tick in your trashcan or sink. They can easily crawl back out.

You can save the tick in tape or a baggie if you want to have it tested for tick-borne diseases.
