We raise chickens, turkeys, pigs, and goats, and hope to continue to add more options every year :)
Our animals are fed a 100% organic diet, given the most authentic life possible (pigs get to BE pigs!), and butcher them in the cleanest, most humane manner possible. Know your farmer, and know your food!

Exciting news! We are partnering with our friends at Walnut Hill Farm at Elm Springs, LLC to offer herd shares of their raw cows’ milk. We will serve as a pickup point, at our markets in Culpeper, Manassas, and The Plains. Send us a note, or stop by one of our booths to get the process started!
Happy birthday to our very own Liberty! She’s an amazing, sweet girl, and we couldn’t ask for a better little future milk cow. Her color has changed, but her sweet personality is still the same ❤️
Mojo says thank you to all of our farmers market friends that came out to shop, and especially to those that asked about him this weekend! He’s happily enjoying short stints outside (chasing birds and bunnies, of course!), with long breaks in the house, in the AC. Stay cool friends, we will see you next week.
Late night bottling up our newest offering! Limited amounts available at our market booths this weekend. Come see us, and stay cool!
It’s that time of year! We are still bottle feeding 26 goat kids, and two lambs. Our mama goats had a total of 37 kids (18 bucks, 19 does). Of those, 10 have sold, 3 are pending, and 2 are retained. We still have several nice doelings, and a whole bunch of bucklings available. Neutered males (wethers) make really great brush clearing pets. They’re super friendly and low maintenance.
Sneak peek- Cheese is coming to market this weekend!
Libby is growing up and learning to be a big girl. She’s out in the main pasture with the other cows, but she’s still mama’s girl when it comes time for scratches. Her birthday is coming up- how is it possible she will be a year old on July 4th?!
Stewie is enjoying this gorgeous spring weather- how about you? Farmer Erica’s favorite time of year is Spring. Stop by our market booth at Historic Manassas Farmers Market on Saturday, or Archwood Green Barns Farmer's Market on Sunday, and tell her why you love spring- you might even get a special discount!
Four more kids on the ground- one doe (gray/white- she will probably stay here!) and three bucks. Looks like it’s the year of black bucks with white points. Anyone need a pair of matching black wethers to pull a cart? How cool would that be?! Five more does due soon, and another group in May. Bottle training starts tomorrow!
Mama Princess had had three beautiful little girls this morning. That brings our baby count to 4 so far, with seven more does due in the coming days (and then another 12 does due in May). Princess is one of our best producers, and her kids have excellent conformation for the show ring. If you’re looking for a 4H show prospect, one of these girls would be an excellent choice! They would also make great future home milkers for a small homestead. They will be available starting in a week or two, once they’ve been started well on the bottle, and have been disbudded and tattooed.
Congratulations, mama Ice Cream! This handsome little buckling made his debut in the lovely weather we had yesterday. Mama and baby are doing well, and both will be looking for new farms (together or separately) in a week or two.
Our friends over at Walnut Hill Walnut Hill Farm at Elm Springs, LLC in Bealeton are hiring summer help! Click through to the original post if you’d like to inquire, or just give Jeff a call.
Now Hiring:
In search of someone to assist with milking cows and goats in the morning. There are two cows and eight goats to be milked. The milking is planned for 8:30 am. Duties would include the actual milking, feeding the animal being milked, filtering and bottling the milk, and cleaning the equipment to be ready for evening milking. This is approximately a two hour job. Pay can be a combination of milk and or cash. While the farm milks seven days a week, a schedule can be made so that several can assist. Homeschool children are welcome to attend with their parent(s). Training will be provided. If this interests you send a message with your telephone number and Jeff will give you a call,a 540-809-4271.
In search of afternoon assistance, after school works. You must be 16 years old to work on a farm, so I have been told. This is going to be a help Jeff position. It could include feeding, mowing, unloading feed, hay bales, garden help, cleaning up brush, watering animals, and much more. Ideally looking for an after school teenager. Paid cash weekly. Parents, if your child is interested have them call, not you.
Now that time has changed, spring is on the door step, Easter is just around the corner, and I need help. Now that winter is almost in the rear view mirror changes are needed. There is plenty that needs to be accomplished, farm wide and to get it all done I am in search of reliable farm labor.
The farm is humming along, more and more needs to be accomplished daily. Spring clean up, and a shift in focus is required, that shift presents an opportunity for someone to learn what we do, why we do it while earning a salary.
This is farm labor, milking is seven days a week there are no weather excuses. Raining, we milk! 20 degrees we milk! 100 degrees we milk! It is called farming.
We’ve been confirmed for another season of the City of Manassas Farmer's Market! Come see us on Saturdays from 8am-1pm, starting April 13th! We will have pork, turkey, grass-fed beef, and will be signing up members for our dairy share.
We are so excited to be heading back to Archwood for another season! Save the date for opening day, and, weather permitting- baby goats!
SAVE THE DATE! The farmers market will be opening on Sunday, April 7th. We are so excited for our 26th season in The Plains. Applications for vendors will launch on our website around March 1st. Stay tuned for updates.
We have turkey! We’ve started processing another batch of turkeys and turning it into cuts (like the breast tenders, shown below) and one-pound packages of ground turkey. Find it all in the farm shop: https://hocknewberryfarm.eatfromfarms.com
Yesterday evening, our girl Tortilla had a strong, healthy little ram lamb. Welcome to the world, Lambchop! He’s our first lamb born here on the farm, and we are so excited!
Who needs a really great deal on some bulk ground beef? As always, 100% grass fed, and 100% delicious. We are partnering with another local farmer to offer 25-pound boxes (so 25x 1-pound packages) of ground beef for just $7/pound. That’s a savings of $2/pound over our usual retail price! These boxes are pre-selling now, and will be available for pickup in late March. Check them out in our online shop, along with all of our other delicious, healthy products.
Amazing news! The new online store is up and running. Orders should be easier, inventory is correct, and now you can even order for home delivery. Please be patient as we work out the glitches, and let us know how we can improve! Give it a try at https://Hocknewberryfarm.eatfromfarms.com
Hock Newberry Farm in Culpeper, VA is a Regenerative Farm offering soy-free meats, dairy, and eggs from pasture-raised livestock.
In breaking farm news: The little girls got a new bale of hay today, and Libby still thinks she is a goat. She’s really darkened up- I can’t wait to see what her summer color looks like.
From our family to yours, we hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving full of love, gratitude, and good food!
A beautiful start to a long day. Thanksgiving turkey processing today. May our team work efficiently, humanely, and with the utmost respect for the gift these animals are giving to so many local families.
Our friends over at Whiffletree Farm had a really great post about turkeys, and I hope they don’t mind me sharing it here. This year, our birds will be processed on 11/11 (tomorrow), and that’s the latest we have done them in many years- mostly due to some personal issues that have come up. One of the biggest takeaways here: our frozen turkeys are likely fresher than any store-bought “fresh” turkey!
We are down to the wire and are only taking waitlist at this point, as the majority of the birds have been reserved. We will have a limited number of cuts available, and will post about those next week.
For future reference- we start taking reservations for our birds in MAY, when the first group of turkey poults (babies) arrives at the farm… so if you want to be sure to have one of our soy-free, non-GMO, pastured, chemical-free birds for your holiday table, you’ll need to get on the list early!
STRAIGHT TALK ABOUT THE FRESH/FROZEN TURKEY ISSUE!
I get a handful of customers who bring up the fresh/frozen issue with turkeys and so I wanted to address that for everybody who is interested!
Here we go!
-When it comes to quality and taste, no surprise here, but I think the farming practices are by far the most determinative. (And of course, we are really proud of how our turkeys are constantly on fresh pasture, receive non-GMO feed, no antibiotics, no chemicals, and are treated humanely from start to finish!)
-We slaughter and process our turkeys in September, and they are frozen for Thanksgiving.
-Unfortunately, the bird that you see in the grocery store that is labeled "Fresh" or "Never Frozen" actually was almost certainly frozen. What?! I know, it is very misleading. The USDA allows the industry to keep turkeys at 26 degrees for months, and then defrost to the 40 degrees you see at the grocery store with the label "Fresh" or "Never Frozen." And the industrial turkey growers are raising Thanksgiving turkeys 10 months of the year which means that that "Fresh" Thanksgiving turkey could be 6 months old. Which all leaves me the fun Yogi-Berra-like thing to say: "Our frozen turkeys are fresher than their fresh turkeys!" Ha!
-Way back in the day we used to raise our turkeys to sell fresh, but we learned some things along the way. So here is why we no longer do that.
*How turkeys grow is very variable so trying to time their growth to be the sizes that customers want right before Thanksgiving is very tricky and often doesn't work out great. This means customers are counting on a certain size turkey and then at the last minute they find out they are getting a much smaller or larger bird than they wanted. I have been through that more times than I would like and it's no fun for anyone!
*Turkeys like ours that are actually raised outdoors on pasture are a lot happier to be raised in the nicer weather of late spring to early fall. I remember some miserable turkeys in cold November rains.
*Slaughtering and processing turkeys in late November can be pretty tough on us farmers. There have been some really cold days, where we were even battling frozen water lines. Eek!
*And finally, I just haven't seen a noticeable reduction in the quality of our frozen turkeys. I think they are one of the tastiest things we raise, and we sell to some of the best chefs in the area who are very happy with them.
Was this informative for you? Did I miss any questions on the topic you might have? Does this all make sense to you or not?
If you haven't reserved your turkey yet, please do now!

Thank you to all our awesome customers who work so hard to discern through the tricky marketing and make thoughtful food choices! We are here because of you!

The latest batch of Guinea Hog piglets is sure taking their “day of rest” seriously. Happy Sunday! May you be as relaxed and cozy as a black piglet in a piggy pile on a lazy, sunny autumn day.
Come see Farmer Erica and Mojo at the City of Manassas Farmer's Market. Bring the kiddos for a Halloween treat- no tricks! We will be here until 1pm today. Hope to see you soon!
The first group of female goats has moved to their breeding pen! They’re also hard at work on the vines and brush that grew up over the summer, doing the landscaping work so I don’t have to. Domino (the buck) will move in soon, once the marking crayon for his breeding harness arrives. This means our 2023 milk season is over, and the 2024 season will kick off in early April. Stay tuned for fun pregnancy photos and, if all goes well, super cute baby pics in March!

One of our mama Guinea Hogs decided to give her kiddos a snack while I was filling water troughs today. If you listen closely, you can hear her softly grunting to them while they eat! #americanguineahog #americanguineahogs #forestraisedpork #heritagehogs #regenerativeagriculture

Sweet Dazzle is very ready for the babies to finish cooking. Poor girl is about ready to pop! 🔊 Sound up and you’ll hear her grumbling about it 😂 #mamagoat #verypregnant #babygoats #rawgoatmilk #rawgoatsmilk #herdshare #regenerativeagriculture #RegenerativeAgriculture
Baby watch! One of our momma pigs is nesting, getting ready for babies. Hoping she holds out for a day or two, but Guinea Hogs are hardy and can tolerate the cold, as long as they have food, shelter, and bedding. #babypigs #americanguineahog #pasturedpork #asnatureintended
They’re here! 125 little peeping poults (that’s baby turkeys)! We are taking reservations for your 2022 holiday bird. Contact us for more info! #pasturedpoultry #pasturedturkey #babyturkey #regenerativeagriculture #soyfree #organicfeed #thanksgiving #turkeydinner
The next batch of broilers has arrived- the first batch will head to the processor next week. I had to cram all of the chicks into one house temporarily, since they came a day earlier than I expected! I’ll get the other house cleaned out today, and move half of them over. #soyfreechicken #pasturedpoultry #regenerativeagriculture #babychicks
Being a first time mom is hard, huh Starlight? It’s going to take a bit of practice before she cares for her baby on her own. 🙄 #nubiangoats #firsttimemom #babygoats #dramatic
Fancy had a beautiful little girl this morning. She hasn’t quite figured out where the milk comes from yet, but she will. Good mama, Fancy! #nubiangoats #babygoatsofinstagram #babygoats #rawmilk #rawgoatmilk #mamagoat
The broilers are really enjoying those organic grains from New Country Organics! Just a few more weeks and chicken will be available again. #pasturedpoultry #soyfreeorganic #regenerativeagriculture #pastureraised #cleaneating #localfood #eatlocal
Princess’ little boy is having a hard time regulating his body temperature. Last night was cold, and he got chilled. So, he got a hot bath, dried with a warm hair dryer, and then spent the day in the warming box with blankets and heating pads. Seeing him suck on my fingers is a good sign- he’s hungry, which means his body temperature is almost back to normal. We’re going to call this guy “Chilly Willy!”
Groot was sneaking a snack from the broilers’ dinner today. There are about 400 birds in the pen with him, 4 weeks away from their processing date. Each pen gets 175 pounds of feed a day, and that will continue to increase until the birds are ready. Did you know it takes 5-6 pounds of grain to produce 1 pound of chicken meat? So these guys should eat a total of 25-30 pounds of grain each during their 10 weeks of life. For a batch of 800, that’s between 10-12 TONS of feed, to produce around 4,500 pounds of meat! #soyfreeorganic #soyfreechicken #pasturedpoultry #regenerativeagriculture #lgd #anatolianshepherd #anatolianshepherdsofinstagram #localfood #newcountryorganics #culpeperva
The chicks are loving their new and improved accommodations! This year we are brooding in greenhouse-style hoop houses, with automatic propane heaters. One week in and so far, so good. 2022 chicken available starting May 6th, or stock your freezer now with our BOGO deal on all remaining cuts in our inventory. #pasturedpoultry #eatlocal #regenerativeagriculture #soyfree
Did you know turkeys will graze? They can actually get up to 45% of their nutrition from grasses and forages. Here’s a few of our #pasturedturkeys enjoying some foraging on this cool October morning. #regenerativeagriculture #pasturedpoultry #soyfreemeat #soyfreeorganic
Cholula loves acorns! Our breeding sows are very friendly, and love to take treats right from my hand. #redwattle #pasturedpork #hocknewberryfarm #regenerativeagriculture
Kronk, one of our Anatolian Shepherd livestock guardians, takes his job very seriously. When the local volunteer fire department goes out on a call, he’s happy to help the sirens reach far and wide 🚨 🐕 awooooo 🎶
