🎃👻Halloween Treats are for Humans, Not Pets!🍬🐾

As we get ready for spooky fun, let's make sure our pets stay safe!🎃Those delicious candies we love – like chocolate, sugar-free treats, and anything with raisins – can be a big no-no for pets. 🐕🍫Here’s why:

· Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which are toxic to dogs and can lead to vomiting, seizures, or worse.

· Xylitol (found in sugar-free candies) can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar, leading to seizures or liver failure.

· Raisins in candies or baked goods can cause kidney failure in dogs, even in small amounts. Candy wrappers may be swallowed, causing digestive blockages that might require surgery.

· High-sugar treats can upset your pet’s stomach and lead to long-term issues like obesity and dental problems.

· Additionally, hard candy, candy corn, licorice, macadamia nuts, butterscotch, and peanut butter with xylitol can be harmful to pets, causing issues like choking, digestive blockages, upset stomachs, elevated blood pressure, vomiting, tremors, pancreatitis, or even organ failure.

So, be sure to keep those spooky sweets out of paw’s reach and treat your pets to something safe instead! 🎉🦴And in case of a pet emergency, we’re here for them 24/7.

Dialysis saved Jinks’ life! 🐾✨

Jinks, a 2-year-old Australian Shepherd, came to ACCESS Specialty Animal Hospital – Los Angeles with leptospirosis-induced kidney failure after showing symptoms like vomiting and a loss of appetite. Despite initial treatments, her kidney values kept rising, and her ability to produce urine diminished. That’s when she was referred to our Nephrology team for life-saving hemodialysis. After two sessions, Jinks started producing more urine, her kidney values improved, and her recovery began! 🙌 Today, she’s happy, healthy, and thriving at home, 5 months later! 🏡💙

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that affects both dogs and humans, often transmitted through contaminated soil or water. Keep your pups safe, especially after heavy rainfall! 🌧

To celebrate International Service Dog Month, we’d love to introduce you to Bonny, a 6-year-old black Labrador with a heart of gold devoted to her sidekick and best friend, Axel, a sweet and spirited young man on the autism spectrum.

Bonny is more than just Axel's companion; she’s his guardian angel. After more than two years of specialized training, she’s earned a degree in "Knowing Exactly What Axel Needs." Whether it’s applying deep pressure therapy to calm his anxiety, gently interrupting self-harming behaviors, or offering a comforting paw when she senses he’s feeling overwhelmed, Bonny’s got it covered.

And like any good buddy, she’ll steer Axel away from danger. Trained for elopement – when someone like Axel, who is cognitively impaired or vulnerable, leaves a safe and supervised environment – Bonny is there to help keep him close and safe, ensuring he stays connected with others by being his rock of security and comfort.

And she’s got a mean frisbee catch!

Bonny’s not just an amazing dog—she’s Axel’s true-blue friend and hero in fur.

So, this International Service Dog Month, let’s give a big cheer for Bonny and all the service dogs out there who bring love, safety, and independence to so many.

Bonny and Axel, you rock!

🐾Happy International Dog Day!🐾

They say a dog is a “man’s best friend,” but let's be honest – dogs are everyone’s best friend! Whether it’s those big puppy eyes that melt your heart, the wagging tail that never stops, or the way they somehow know when you need a little extra love, dogs make every day brighter.🌟

So, on International Dog Day, celebrated annually on August 26, give your four-legged buddy an extra treat, a long walk, or just some good ol' belly rubs. They deserve it for all the love they give us! 🐕♥️

Share a pic of your dog in the comments, and let’s spread the puppy love!

Summer is reaching its peak, and as most pet parents know the dangers of heat stroke and sun exposure, it’s always helpful to get an expert opinion, or two. 👩‍⚕️👩‍⚕️

ACCESS Pasadena’s Dr. Danielle Demel and Hearts and Halos’ Dr. Mellissa “MJ” Jae were recently featured in the Los Angeles Times to give their expertise on how to keep our fluffy ones safe and cool this Summer. 🐶☀️🥵

Don't forget the "7-second rule". If it's too hot to place your bare hand on the ground for 7 seconds, it's too hot for bare paws.

🐾🐍 Keep Your Pets Safe from Rattlesnakes! 🐍🐾

With rattlesnake season upon us, it's time to ensure our pets stay safe and sound. Here are some friendly tips to help protect your pets from those sneaky serpents:

Leash Up: Keep your pets on a leash during walks to prevent any unexpected encounters.

Stay Clear of Tall Grass: Stick to clear paths and avoid letting pets explore tall grass or bushes.

Snake-Proof Your Yard: Install snake-proof fencing and clear out any yard debris where snakes might hide.

Short Grass, Happy Pets: Keep your grass trimmed and bushes neat to deter snakes.

Training Time: Look into rattlesnake aversion training for your curious canines.

Eyes on Pets: Always supervise your pets when they're outside, especially in snake-prone areas.

Know the Signs: Learn the symptoms of a snakebite, like swelling and puncture wounds.

Noisy Yard: Use wind chimes or ultrasonic devices to keep snakes away.

Outdoor Supervision: Only let pets outside when you can keep an eye on them.

Snake Savvy: Educate yourself about local snake species and their habits.

Vet ASAP: If bitten, rush to the vet immediately – time is crucial!

🎆🐾 How to Keep Your Pets Calm and Safe During Fireworks 🐾🎆

Fireworks are fun for us, but they can be super scary for our pets. Here are some tips to help keep your pets calm and comfortable:

1. Create a Safe Space: Set up a cozy, quiet area with their favorite blankets and toys.
2. Keep Them Indoors: Close windows and doors to minimize noise and prevent them from running away.
3. Provide Background Noise: Turn on the TV, or radio, or play calming music to drown out the fireworks.
4. Stay Calm and Comforting: Act normally and offer extra cuddles to reassure them.
5. Keep Them Occupied: Distract them with interactive toys or treats.
6. Ensure Proper ID: Make sure they have ID tags and consider microchipping them.
7. Stay With Them: If you can, stay home to provide comfort and security.

With these tips, you can help your pet stay safe and calm during the fireworks and enjoy a stress-free celebration together! 🐶❤️🐱
