To celebrate International Service Dog Month, we’d love to introduce you to Bonny, a 6-year-old black Labrador with a heart of gold devoted to her sidekick and best friend, Axel, a sweet and spirited young man on the autism spectrum.

Bonny is more than just Axel's companion; she’s his guardian angel. After more than two years of specialized training, she’s earned a degree in "Knowing Exactly What Axel Needs." Whether it’s applying deep pressure therapy to calm his anxiety, gently interrupting self-harming behaviors, or offering a comforting paw when she senses he’s feeling overwhelmed, Bonny’s got it covered.

And like any good buddy, she’ll steer Axel away from danger. Trained for elopement – when someone like Axel, who is cognitively impaired or vulnerable, leaves a safe and supervised environment – Bonny is there to help keep him close and safe, ensuring he stays connected with others by being his rock of security and comfort.

And she’s got a mean frisbee catch!

Bonny’s not just an amazing dog—she’s Axel’s true-blue friend and hero in fur.

So, this International Service Dog Month, let’s give a big cheer for Bonny and all the service dogs out there who bring love, safety, and independence to so many.

Bonny and Axel, you rock!

🐾Happy International Dog Day!🐾

They say a dog is a “man’s best friend,” but let's be honest – dogs are everyone’s best friend! Whether it’s those big puppy eyes that melt your heart, the wagging tail that never stops, or the way they somehow know when you need a little extra love, dogs make every day brighter.🌟

So, on International Dog Day, celebrated annually on August 26, give your four-legged buddy an extra treat, a long walk, or just some good ol' belly rubs. They deserve it for all the love they give us! 🐕♥️

Share a pic of your dog in the comments, and let’s spread the puppy love!

Summer is reaching its peak, and as most pet parents know the dangers of heat stroke and sun exposure, it’s always helpful to get an expert opinion, or two. 👩‍⚕️👩‍⚕️

🐾🐍 Keep Your Pets Safe from Rattlesnakes! 🐍🐾

With rattlesnake season upon us, it's time to ensure our pets stay safe and sound. Here are some friendly tips to help protect your pets from those sneaky serpents:

Leash Up: Keep your pets on a leash during walks to prevent any unexpected encounters.

Stay Clear of Tall Grass: Stick to clear paths and avoid letting pets explore tall grass or bushes.

Snake-Proof Your Yard: Install snake-proof fencing and clear out any yard debris where snakes might hide.

Short Grass, Happy Pets: Keep your grass trimmed and bushes neat to deter snakes.

Training Time: Look into rattlesnake aversion training for your curious canines.

Eyes on Pets: Always supervise your pets when they're outside, especially in snake-prone areas.

Know the Signs: Learn the symptoms of a snakebite, like swelling and puncture wounds.

Noisy Yard: Use wind chimes or ultrasonic devices to keep snakes away.

Outdoor Supervision: Only let pets outside when you can keep an eye on them.

Snake Savvy: Educate yourself about local snake species and their habits.

Vet ASAP: If bitten, rush to the vet immediately – time is crucial!

🎆🐾 How to Keep Your Pets Calm and Safe During Fireworks 🐾🎆

Fireworks are fun for us, but they can be super scary for our pets. Here are some tips to help keep your pets calm and comfortable:

1. Create a Safe Space: Set up a cozy, quiet area with their favorite blankets and toys.
2. Keep Them Indoors: Close windows and doors to minimize noise and prevent them from running away.
3. Provide Background Noise: Turn on the TV, or radio, or play calming music to drown out the fireworks.
4. Stay Calm and Comforting: Act normally and offer extra cuddles to reassure them.
5. Keep Them Occupied: Distract them with interactive toys or treats.
6. Ensure Proper ID: Make sure they have ID tags and consider microchipping them.
7. Stay With Them: If you can, stay home to provide comfort and security.

With these tips, you can help your pet stay safe and calm during the fireworks and enjoy a stress-free celebration together! 🐶❤️🐱

Thank you for the kind words, Amanda and Violet!

"Dr. Stephanie Smith at Access Culver City has been going above and beyond for my dog since she started caring for her last fall. My dog, Violet, was diagnosed with an insulinoma in September and has been diabetic since her surgery.

A few weeks ago, Violet was somewhat lethargic and had an appointment for a blood glucose monitor change. I told the assistant she wasn't feeling like herself. I didn't think anything was seriously wrong. Dr. Smith, who had a very full schedule, asked to examine her and discovered that her blood glucose was more than 600, and she was in the early stages of pancreatitis. She hospitalized Violet and kept her from becoming much sicker. If Dr. Smith had not intervened, Violet could have become gravely ill.

Today, Violet had a dental procedure. Dr. Smith went the extra mile to ensure the dentist understood her case, coordinated with the dentist to have an anesthesiologist on the case and coordinated her care throughout the day. I have never heard of a vet coordinating care in such an integrated manner—and across clinics—to provide the best care for the pet. The procedure was successful; there were no complications, and Violet now rests comfortably at home.

I am so grateful for Dr. Smith's expertise, skill, compassion, commitment, and kindness. I trust her completely and enthusiastically recommend her to others". 👩🐶❤️‍🩹

🌴☀️ Attention Southern California Pet Owners! ☀️🌴

As the temperatures rise in our sunny paradise, it's crucial to remember that our pets feel the heat too! 🐾☀️ With summer approaching, it's essential to take extra precautions to keep our pets safe and comfortable. Here in Southern California, where the sun shines brightly and the climate is warm, the heat can pose serious risks to our pets. 🌡️🐶 Heatstroke, dehydration, and burnt paw pads are just a few dangers they face.

Here are some tips to help protect your pets from the scorching summer heat:

1. **Stay Hydrated:** Always provide access to plenty of fresh, cool water, especially during outdoor activities.
2. **Seek Shade:** Ensure your pets have access to shaded areas outdoors, and limit their time in direct sunlight, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
3. **Never Leave Them in Cars:** Even with cracked windows, cars can quickly become ovens in the California heat. Never leave your pet unattended in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
4. **Protect Their Paws:** Hot pavement and surfaces can burn your pet's paw pads. Opt for walks during cooler times of the day or invest in protective booties.
5. **Know the Signs of Heatstroke:** Excessive panting, drooling, weakness, and collapse are all signs of heatstroke. If you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke, seek veterinary care immediately.

Let's work together to ensure our pets stay safe and healthy all summer long! 🐱💦 Share your favorite pet-friendly summer tips in the comments below! 🐾

Meet the cutest little Shih Tzu, Queen Ellie -
Ellie was referred to ACCESS - Los Angeles after being diagnosed with a ureteral obstruction. Ellie had become acutely painful, had abnormal urination habits, and was drinking more than normal. Ellie had an ultrasound with our radiologist, and it was determined that she had multiple stones in her ureter that were obstructing urine flow from the kidney to the bladder. Our surgery team then successfully placed a ureteral stent, which is a hollow tubular implant that allows for the passage of urine through the device. This allowed us to bypass the obstruction, which alleviated Ellie’s discomfort and helped us save her kidney! She was closely monitored afterward by our critical care and nephrology teams, as well as our amazing ICU technicians, and was able to go home to her lovely mom. Ellie is getting back to her normal spunky self and is enjoying trips to the beach again. We are hoping that Ellie’s stones will slowly dissolve over time. Ellie is continuing to receive specialized care and medical management with Dr. Spillane through our nephrology department.”v 🐶💖

Meet Lincoln!

Lincoln presented to our San Fernando Valley ACCESS after receiving a bite from a large dog. Lincoln sustained a traumatic brain and head injury (TBI). He was initially stabilized by our emergency team and was administered fluids, antibiotics, pain medications, and drugs to reduce swelling in the brain.

With the talents and collaboration of our critical care and neurology team, Lincoln was given a computed tomography (CT) which revealed skull fractures and a huge hematoma (bruise) on the brain. Lincoln also became anemic from the bleeding, so he received a blood transfusion. He stabilized, and the next day was transferred to our South Bay ACCESS location to have a craniectomy (brain surgery!)

Lincoln did amazingly through his surgery, which revealed a large abscess (infection) and hematoma under the skull. These were removed and flushed well, and Lincoln recovered well! He is now home recovering with his family and doing great! We just saw Lincoln on recheck, and he is a happy and recovering puppy!
