The Allegany County Animal Shelter was the first No-Kill municipal shelter in the state of Maryland and is run by the ACAS Management Foundation. Lost animals are held 4 days until their owner brings them back home. You will see pictures of all the adoptable cats and dogs, and be informed when they find their "forever homes". ♥️♥️A MUST MEET ♥️♥️

Zara, spayed female
8 years old
Friendly, sweet and wants to find her new people.

Sadly, Zara was brought back to the shelter after 7 years because her family’s rented home sold, putting them in a pinch to find another quickly. Unfortunately, that location doesn’t allow pets.

Zara walks great on a leash, appears to be house trained- (we always recommend a refresher), is dog friendly and as much as we’ve noticed, hasn’t paid much mind to the cats. She’s the unicorn of unicorns.

Please no snarky comments.. if you follow our page, you probably love animals like we do. Our goal is to find Zara her new forever home.

✨ Good Dog of the Week ✨

Meet Raven! She was nominated for her diligent hound behavior. Raven was nose-down for nearly all of her walk today, tracking down scents all over the shelter property. Not only is she a highly-intelligent hard-worker, but she is also a love bug (once she turns her attention to you). Raven made new friends today when she met some of the volunteers! She is around 1 year old and medium size (around 25-30lbs).

Raven’s stay at the shelter has been short so far, and we’d like to keep it that way! Share this post and help her find a forever family. 💜🩵

We've all seen the "if it's too cold for you, it's too cold for them" posts—some of you applaud them, while others find them annoying. The sad reality is that dogs die outside in extreme weather.

Use the proper channels when reporting unattended dogs. Do not tag our staff and/or volunteers on social media or send us a Facebook message. In many cases, time is of the essence and these forms of communication are not frequently monitored.

Our Animal Control Officers will be following up on each report and will be citing individuals in violation of this law.

❣️ Bandit is still available for adoption! ❣️

A couple Saturdays ago, Bandit got to go out for Hounds Around Town! His walker graciously shared some pictures from his day out!

Bandit walks well on a leash. He often goes to the bathroom outside rather than in his kennel. Bandit is 3.5 years old and has been at the shelter since June 2024. ❤️

Hello there, we're Copper (2) and Cedar (6), a bonded pair of gentle souls. We may be a bit shy at first, but give us a moment and you'll see our friendly nature shine through. We love to spend our days playing together, exploring new smells and finding the perfect spot for a nap. We're adult dogs, which means we're past the puppy stage and have settled into our personalities. Life has thrown us a curveball and we have some healing to do. We're kind, and always there for each other. We're looking for a forever home where we can share our love and loyalty. Adopt us and let's make memories together.

Greetings from Toby!

Hello there, I'm Toby. I've always been a friendly soul, full of warmth and kindness. I'm known for my gentle nature, the kind that makes you feel at home. I'm a great listener, perfect for those days when you just need someone to lend an ear. I may not be a puppy anymore, but I have a heart full of love to give and I’m only five years young. If you're looking for a loyal companion who'll stick by your side, I'm your guy. Adopt me and let's make memories together.

✨ Good Dog of the Week ✨

Meet Jelly, our good dog of the week! Jelly was nominated for Good Dog of the Week because she is an often overlooked resident who would benefit greatly from getting out of the shelter environment. Jelly is a senior black lab mix, traits that statistically make her more likely to be passed by. This spotlight is to showcase just how amazing Jelly is!

Jelly is nearly 7 years old and has a puppy-dog face just made to beg for all your favorite treats. She has been called “spunky but very loving” by one volunteer. Jelly is best when given time to warm up to people away from the shelter, so a foster-to-adopt situation may be ideal to give both her and the adopter time to adjust.

‼️ March marks Jelly’s one-year-anniversary at the shelter. Please share to help her find a home in time to spend her 7th birthday (March 11th) with a family of her own. ‼️

💚 Meet Mizzy! 💚

It’s a “mizz”tery how this dog is still available for adoption! Mizzy is around 1.5 years old and, sadly, most of that time has been spent at the shelter. November marked Mizzy’s one-year anniversary as a shelter pup. Full of energy and love, Mizzy’s personality has been steadfast during her unfortunately long stay. She is playful and has done well around other dogs. As always, meet and greets are required before adoption.

Mizzy’s resolution is to find her forever soccer partner, someone who doesn’t mind playing ball and getting a little muddy from time to time. She would love to spend the day as your companion and the evening snuggled up with you. This girl has so much to give! Message us to set up a time to meet her!

ACAS - A Shelter of Hope

The Allegany County Animal Shelter is the first and only one of two No-Kill municipal shelters in the state of Maryland and is run by the ACAS Management Foundation. We are a 501C3, non-profit organization. The Allegany County Animal Shelter serves as a “Shelter of Hope” for the lost, abandoned, and homeless animals of Allegany County. We strive to expand and strengthen our leadership in animal care, humane education, and progressive animal welfare programs and to find common-sense solutions for animal-related problems in our community.
