Did you know that microchips offer the best chance of reuniting you with your pet if they ever get lost? At the Forsyth County Pet Resource Center, every lost pet is scanned for a microchip upon arrival. If your pet has one, the chip provides a unique ID number that’s specifically linked to your pet, allowing us to access your contact information and quickly get in touch with you to bring your pet home.

Microchips are far more reliable than traditional ID collars because they can’t be lost or removed, and you never have to worry about your pet leaving the house without it. However, it’s crucial to keep your contact information up to date. Whenever you change your phone number, address, email, or if ownership of the pet changes, be sure to update the details linked to your pet’s microchip.

To update or verify your contact information, you’ll need to contact the company that issued the microchip. If you’re not sure which company that is, you can either reach out to the facility that implanted the chip or search the unique microchip number on the website below. If you don’t know your pet’s microchip number, any veterinary office can scan the chip and provide it to you. Once you have the number, you can look up the manufacturer and update your information directly.

Keeping your pet’s microchip information current is a simple yet powerful way to ensure they can always find their way back home.

Meet Coco!

This one-of-a-kind pup was one of four lucky dogs chosen for DNA testing, thanks to the generous donation of Wisdom Panel. This non-invasive saliva test will reveal what makes Coco so special! What do you think Coco is made of?

Before being surrendered to our facility, Coco spent his days as a 100% outdoor dog, making him a perfect candidate for a farm-style life. But with a little time and patience, he’s sure to blossom into an equally wonderful family companion, ready to enjoy the comforts of indoor life. At just 5.5 years old, Coco has the calm and wisdom of an older dog, balanced with just the right amount of energy. He’s a relaxed, easygoing guy who gets along well with other dogs and he absolutely LOVES kiddie pools!

We’re expecting his full breed results in about a month, but why wait to meet him? Adopt Coco now and we’ll send you his DNA results as soon as they arrive! You can meet Coco Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM, and no appointment is needed.

It’s happening again: we’re expecting below-freezing temperatures and the possibility of snow and ice accumulation. While it’s still uncertain whether the Pet Resource Center will be closed next week, we are proactively seeking temporary fosters for some of the pets in our care.

If you participated last week and opted to be added to our emergency weather short-term foster list, we will be reaching out to you soon. If you didn’t participate last time but are interested in fostering this time, please contact us at [email protected], call us at 678-965-7185, or stop by in person between 10:30 AM and 4:00 PM tomorrow! If you email, please include details about your household in your initial message.

All fosters will need to pick up their pets by 4:00 PM tomorrow, or by appointment on Sunday. Please note that Sunday pickups are by appointment only, but you’re welcome to stop by anytime between 10:30 AM and 4:00 PM tomorrow. At this time, we anticipate the pets will likely need shelter until next Friday, but this timeline may change as the weather situation develops.

Thank you for your continued support and flexibility as we work to keep our pets safe during the winter weather!

Keeping Pets and People Together: Tips for Finding Pet-Friendly Rentals

At the Forsyth County Pet Resource Center, we believe in the power of keeping pets and people together. Lately, we’ve seen an increase in pet surrender requests, with one of the leading reasons being the challenge of finding pet-friendly rentals. If you’re facing a move, we want to share some resources and tips to help you plan ahead and keep your furry family member by your side.

1. Plan Ahead – Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute
As soon as you suspect you may be moving, start developing a pet-friendly housing plan. Waiting until the last moment drastically reduces your chances of finding a rental that works for both you and your pet. If your lease is coming up for renewal, even if you plan to stay, consider what you’ll do if your landlord changes pet policies or raises rent.

2. Use Helpful Websites
Websites like myPitbullIsFamily.org specialize in helping you find rentals that are both pet-friendly and breed-friendly. Most major rental listing sites also have search filters that let you focus specifically on pet-friendly options.

3. Read the Pet Policy Carefully
Just because a rental is listed as “pet-friendly” doesn’t always mean your pet is welcome. Always check for breed, size, or number restrictions before you apply. Pay close attention to additional costs, like pet fees or deposits, as these can impact your budget.

While many rentals today are becoming more pet-friendly, it’s up to us as pet owners to ensure our pets are part of our long-term plans. Let’s keep our pets in our homes and our families together.

Meet Zeus, our lucky pup who’s about to become a DNA superstar! Thanks to Wisdom Panel, Zeus is getting a non-invasive saliva test to uncover the mystery of his unique breed mix. We’re excited to learn more about the genetics behind this handsome boy. What do you think his ancestry is made of?

Zeus has had quite the journey—rescued from an abandonment and cruelty case alongside 9 other dogs. While his friends have already found their forever homes, Zeus is still patiently waiting for that special someone to call his own. His love language? Food, of course! Zeus will do anything for a tasty treat. He’s also been good with other dogs but prefers to meet any potential furry roommates first, to ensure the perfect match.

We’ll have his full breed results in about a month, but why wait? If you adopt Zeus now, we’ll send you a copy of his DNA results as soon as they arrive. You can meet this sweet boy Tuesday through Saturday, from 10:30 AM to 5 PM, no appointment necessary!

Winter Storm Alert! Keep Your Pets Safe in the Cold!

With a winter storm on the way, it’s time to make sure our furry friends stay warm and safe during the chilly days ahead. Here are some important cold weather safety tips for your pets:

Bundle Up: Small pets, short-haired breeds, and older animals are especially sensitive to the cold. Consider a cozy pet sweater or jacket to help them stay warm during walks.

Limit Outdoor Time: While your pet might love a good romp in the snow, be mindful of their exposure to freezing temperatures. Avoid long walks and always check the weather forecast before heading out.

Protect Their Paws: Snow, ice, and salt can be harsh on your pet's paws. Wipe their paws with a towel after walks or invest in dog booties for extra protection.

Keep Them Hydrated: Cold weather can still lead to dehydration. Make sure fresh water is always available indoors for your pets.

Create a Cozy Space: Bring your pets indoors when possible. If they must be outside, provide a well-insulated shelter to protect them from the elements.

Let’s keep our pets safe and warm as we weather the storm! Stay prepared and share these tips with fellow pet owners.

URGENT: Short-Term Dog Fosters Needed!

With the impending winter storm, the Forsyth County Pet Resource Center urgently needs individuals who can provide temporary foster homes for shelter dogs. This will help keep the dogs safe and comfortable during the storm. The Resource Center will provide crates and all necessary supplies, and you don’t need to be an established foster to participate. If you’re interested, please reach out to us at [email protected], and we will match you with a shelter dog in need.

Fosters must be able to pick up their dog by 4 PM tomorrow, with anticipated drop-off on Sunday afternoon or Monday, depending on weather conditions. While we have plans for animals unable to find foster homes, we are hoping to limit the strain on our dedicated staff, who will be working overnight to care for the animals. Your help would make a significant difference in ensuring the safety and well-being of our shelter pets during this challenging time.

Exciting news, everyone! After seeing the buzz Betty created with her Embark DNA test that we received from an anonymous donor, we thought, "Why stop there?" So, we reached out to some amazing companies to see if they'd be willing to help us uncover the secrets of our overlooked furry friends!

A huge shoutout to Wisdom Panel for coming through with not one, but FOUR breed tests for our adoptable pups! We couldn't be more excited to find out who they really are—just like Betty! It was tough to pick, but we finally decided on Zeus, Tilly, Bob, and Coco—four of the most lovable fluffballs who’ve been patiently waiting for their forever families for SIX MONTHS or longer!

Stay tuned, because over the next few weeks, we’ll be introducing you to each of these adorable pups! Who knows, one of them might just steal your heart (and maybe your sofa too)!

Did you know that shelter pets can experience a condition called "kennel stress"? This typically occurs when animals are in shelters or other kennel environments for long periods. While it's most commonly seen in dogs, cats can also be affected.

What is kennel stress? It's the accumulation of emotional and physical strain that pets endure when placed in high-arousal, high-stress environments such as shelters. This stress can lead to behaviors that were not present before arrival such as anxiety, excessive barking, pacing, loss of appetite, weight loss, bathroom accidents, and more.

Why does it happen? Despite our best efforts to minimize the stress animals in our care experience, they are still surrounded by unfamiliar smells, sounds, and people, which can overwhelm them, leading to anxiety and stress. In some cases, it can even affect their health, making them more susceptible to illness, as prolonged stress can weaken their immune system.

Every animal is different. Some pets can go months or longer without developing signs of kennel stress, while others are almost immediately affected by it. When you visit a shelter and see dogs barking and jumping in their kennels, it’s important to remember that these behaviors are rarely an accurate representation of the pet’s true personality. Most of the time, these behaviors are a result of kennel stress. Once the pet is out of the kennel, their entire demeanor can change, and you can see their amazing personality shine through.

At the Forsyth County Pet Resource Center, we make every effort to provide proper enrichment and activities to help our pets avoid kennel stress. However, the unfortunate truth is that no matter what we do, pets will still experience this condition, and some will be more affected than others. The one good thing about this condition is that once these pets find their forever home or a dedicated foster, the stress-induced behaviors almost immediately resolve because the triggers have disappeared, and the pet now has an environment where they can properly decompress.

Our goal with this post is to spread awareness of the challenges shelter pets face and help potential adopters and fosters understand that you cannot always judge an animal by their kennel behavior. Always ask to see them out of the kennel, or at the very least, ask staff about the pet’s true personality. If you're considering adopting or fostering, remember that patience and understanding are key to helping them adjust to their new environments.

Below, you can see the current faces of kennel stress within our facility. If you're interested in any of them, please stop by Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM, or call us at 678-965-7185.

🎉 Drumroll, please... the results are in! 🎉

Remember that amazing Embark dog DNA test we received as a generous donation? Well, we put it to the test on our long-time resident, Betty, who's been with us for over two years! We were quite surprised to see what she came back as, and we would love to hear your thoughts!

Sadly, Betty is still available for adoption. Her new family will get a copy of her DNA results AND a detailed health screening that was included on the DNA test. This test helped screen Betty for 274 genetic health risks, and she came back with flying colors!

You can meet the one and only Betty Tuesday through Saturday, from 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM. No appointment needed—just stop by and ask the front desk to meet the infamous Betty!
