Back in the day, when we didn’t even have a gift shop, Farmer Fred and got his start at farmers markets, completely unaware of the world of craft shows. Once we discovered the craft show scene, we started hitting around 10 shows a year. The best show was always The Madison County Bridge Festival. 🚜🌻

🌸 Howells History: The Blooms of Madison County 🌸

In 1995, we hit a major milestone—Howell’s was featured on the cover of Home and Garden Magazine! 🏡🌿 What made this even more special was the 8- page spread that showcased the beauty of our flowers and the hard work that went into making our farm a true gem in Madison County. 🌾✨

This was a huge moment for us, as it put us on the map and helped share our passion for dried flowers and agritourism with a much wider audience. People from all over started hearing about us and visiting to see the farm for themselves! 🌻

We’re so proud of how far we’ve come, and this feature was a huge turning point in our journey. Swipe through the photos to see a glimpse of that exciting time and the blooms that made us feel famous! 🌼

In case you missed our Facebook story yesterday with the goats showing off their St. Patrick’s Day spirit, here’s a behind-the-scenes look at what it really takes to capture the perfect goat pictures. Spoiler alert: It involves lots of treats, patience, and a little goat chaos! We have a video of the action, but Facebook wouldn't let me upload both pictures and videos so check out today's story those ⬆️⬆️⬆️

Here’s are some pictures of the farm’s first goat, Clayton! He had split personalities—one minute, he’d pull us around in the wagon, the next, he’d knock you right off your bike sideways if you dared ride past him! When we asked Fred why he got a goat, he just shrugged and said, “It seemed like a good idea at the time...” And honestly, it really was!

Earlier today we posted about the history of our dried flower gift shop. Here is a video of what that looked like in 1994!
Once visitors started flocking to the farm, we knew it was time to expand! 🚜 In 1994, Farmer Fred built a gift shop inside our ancestral 1910 barn, creating a permanent space for all the beautiful products we were making. 🏡

Before that, Cindy Howell had been doing all the dried flower arranging in the basement of the house—talk about a tight squeeze! 😅 The new gift shop gave her and the team a more spacious and permanent spot to create and showcase their work.

At the height of the dried flower era, we had 6 full-time floral designers! 🌸 It was an exciting time of growth, creativity, and of course, lots of flowers.

Come visit and take a stroll through the barn—it’s full of history and stories like these! 💚

1993 was a BIG year for us! 📰 We were featured in our first newspaper article—the entire front page of the Des Moines Sunday Register by Carol McGarvey! 🙌 The feature highlighted our colorful alternative crop, and after that, people started flocking to the farm to see the top of the barn where we stored the flowers! 🌸

Next time you’re out at the farm, make sure to venture up to the top of the barn—it’s a unique sight you won’t want to miss! 😍

🌱 This week, we got to work in the greenhouse! The girls have been busy, busy, busy planting all the little plugs. 🌿 Lots of hands-on work and making sure everything’s ready for the season ahead. 💪 Excited to see it all come together as the plants start to grow! 🌸

In the early days, German Statice was a huge hit! 🌸 It was perfect for wreaths and arrangement bases, and at one point, Farmer Fred grew 4 acres of it! 😱 The upstairs of the barn was packed with nothing but German Statice. He even sold the whole crop every year with just a tiny ad in Florist Review magazine! ✨

This year, we’re experimenting with bringing German Statice back to the farm! Who knows—maybe we’ll start the trend all over again! 🌿
