Even with free choice, each of us has a tomorrow for which we are responsible. Never believe for a moment that you are free to mender across the world at random without influencing anything and anyone. No matter how misguided you may have been in the past, you have sensed there is some thing greater that loves and tries to help. Do you not cut yourself off from the HOLY SPIRIT HELP . Now that you have power, not over others but over yourself. If you believe you can overcome anything, you can overcome anything. Trust yourself and trust the Holy Spirit to help you do what you were meant to do.

Examination and registration with the OFA Spine Database
Some dog breeds are prone to serious spinal problems. How to get your dog checked and registered.
A graphical depiction of a dog's spine
by Dr. Mikel Delgado, PhD
Some breeds of dogs are prone to spinal problems. French Bulldogs, Bulldogs and Boston Terriers are sometimes born with defects of the spine due to their having short back legs and curled tails. These congenital conditions, thought to be genetic, can lead to pain, nerve dysfunction, or even paralysis.

The OFA is currently collecting information on vertebral anomalies which may be inherited. The database is being maintained in concert with the French Bulldog Club of America, with an invitation to owners of Boston Terriers and Bulldogs to contribute.

The anomalies that are assessed include:

Hemivertebrae: one or more shortened or deformed vertebrae. The degree it impacts the dog depends on where and how severe the deformity is. If the spine is being compressed, there may be pain and weakness.
Butterfly vertebrae: a deformity of the spine that leads to vertebrae with a cleft from a failure of fusion.
Block vertebrae: when two or more vertebrae are fused together.
Transitional vertebra: malformed vertebrae, found at locations where the vertebrae change shape (e.g., between the rib cage and lower back). Can lead to premature degeneration of the spine.
Spina bifida: when the vertebrae fail to completely enclose the spinal cord. Can lead to incontinence, hind leg weakness and paralysis.
To enroll your dog in the database, x-rays with good detail of the entire spine (C1 through L7) from a lateral and ventrodorsal projection must be submitted.

How do I get my dog screened and registered with the OFA?

Step 1

Schedule an appointment with your veterinarian. This can also be part of an annual examination and vaccine appointment. Download, print, and bring the OFA form to your appointment (found here).

Step 2

The veterinarian will perform x-rays of your dog’s spine. Details about required positioning are outlined on the application form.

Step 3

Your veterinarian will assist you with completion of the OFA form.

Once the application form is completed either you or your veterinarian will then submit the radiographs as detailed here.

Note: It is recommended that the permanent identification of the dog (e.g., tattoo, microchip) is verified by the veterinarian at the time of the evaluation.

Step 4

Once the application form is completed, the breeder will need to send the form and fee to OFA. An OFA Certified Radiologist will assess the radiographs.

OFA examination and registration of elbow dysplasia
How to get your dog's elbows registered in the OFA database.

by Rachel Jefferds
Elbow Dysplasia refers to abnormalities in the joint that can result in the breakdown of cartilage in the joint over time, resulting in varying degrees of pain and lameness over time.

Screening requires x-rays, performed by a licensed veterinarian, be submitted to OFA for review. Submitted radiographs are reviewed independently by 3 randomly selected board-certified veterinary radiologists.

Dogs must be at least 24 months of age to have elbows certified as normal by OFA. The OFA does offer a preliminary evaluation for those less than 24 months of age, but the predictive value of preliminary evaluation is unknown for elbow dysplasia.

Note: Registration of test results is imperative for advancing canine health. Data from health registries support research efforts into canine diseases, establish validated diagnostic criteria, and maintain the reported test results in a reliable public database. Registered data can be used to identify newly emerging conditions, monitor the efficacy of interventions in decreasing the prevalence of conditions, and help breeders make informed breeding decisions.

Disclaimer: Although not required by OFA, chemical restraint (sedation or anesthesia) to the point of muscle relaxation is recommended. Chemical restraint may minimize the need for repeat radiographs (less radiation exposure) while providing a less fearful experience for the dog.

How do I get my dog screened and registered with the OFA?

Step 1

Schedule an appointment with your veterinarian. Download, print, and bring the OFA form to your appointment (found here).

Note: Discuss the use of sedation with your veterinarian prior to the appointment.

Step 2

When you arrive for your appointment, your veterinarian will examine your dog, give the appropriate sedation when indicated and take x-rays of your dog. Be sure to have all the appropriate paperwork ready for your veterinarian to complete.

Step 3

Your veterinarian will complete and sign the application form for OFA, identify the radiograph with your dog’s registration name or number, the date of the radiograph, and the veterinarian’s name or hospital name.

Step 4

Once the application form is completed either you or your veterinarian will then submit the radiographs via one of the methods listed here.

Note: The radiograph, application and fees will need to be sent together, either by your veterinarian or yourself, depending on method of submission.
