Our big beautiful dumerils boa Maddie has been with us for over 10 years now. She is one of the OG animals here at the zoo. During this time she has been a huge part of our lives, no pun intended 🐸

These amazing boas live on the island of Madagascar where they inhabit dry forest and other habitats found on this diverse Island. They feed primarily on ground birds and small mammals. Dumerils boas are extremely powerful, in fact for their size they are one of the strongest snakes on earth.

We are proud breeders of this species. Every other year we have babies from Maddie and a few other females. This coming summer we hope to have more baby boas to share with everyone!

Maddie
Species: Dumerils boa
Latin : Acrantophis dumerili
Age: 15 years
Weight: 45lb
Length: 8ft
Conservation Status: least concern

One of the more unique looking snakes that we keep here are the Baron’s racer. These snakes are mildly venomous, opisthoglyphous snakes which means they have grooved fangs located at the back of their mouth. Because of the anatomy of their fangs, and the means in which they deliver venom (by chewing), and the lack of venom potency, Baron’s racers are not harmful to humans.
We are open Wednesday through Sunday 11-6 and Sunday 12-5, last admissions are 1 hour before posted closing time.

We brought out the smaller female black tail for pictures and some time outside this morning.
Black tail cribos are large non-venomous species of snake in the colubrid family that inhabit the southern United States, Mexico, and central America. These snakes are some of the most incredible eaters, and will dine on just about anything. Their diet consists of small mammals, birds, amphibians, fish, and other reptiles including venomous snakes which they are able to take down alive, rather than constricting like many other snakes.
