It was an exhausting few days! Our team worked hard, spent much time on the phone with other groups and zoom meetings with the Senators and Committee Chair explaining our position. We consulted with the American Wild Horse Campaign to be sure we crossed every T and dotted every I and that we were on the same page. We reviewed the wording of SJR3, every word, one sentence at a time and made recommendations for amendments.
We spoke to the senators at great length so they would understand our objections and fears and we truly felt grateful that they took the time to listen to the concerns of the Pine Nut Wild Horse Advocates. We appreciated the representatives who took the time to listen to us and our fact based recommended changes. The bill was based on the BLM system of AML and AML (Appropriate Management Level) was not based on science. Clearly the National Academy of Science stated they could not find any science supporting AML.
In the end, understanding the seriousness of the Nevada resolution (SJR3) being pushed forward by the Committee Chair, Senator Denote, the American Wild Horse Campaign hired a lobbyist to be certain our concerns were heard. Only hours from the final vote the language was included in the resolution "the humane and science-based management of wild free-roaming horse and b***o populations" and "and prioritizing humane fertility control, as recommended by the National Academy of Sciences " This is a amendment. This was a big win.
The now amended SJR3 will push forward to the assembly where we will continue to fight. We still have a resolution moving forward with the state of Nevada clearly telling the federal government that Nevada wants them to make rounding up and stockpiling an additional nearly 40,000 wild horses and b***os off the public lands of Nevada. All polls clearly show that this is not the opinion of the vast majority of Nevadans. We are asking that our legislative body express the opinions of the majority of Nevadans, not special interest.
Clearly we still have work to do. Your emails, connecting to the link at the state legislation, phone calls and opinions really made a difference. The Chair, Senator Fabian Donate, spent a long time with all of us, gathering information before making a decision. This bill had more activity than any other bill in 2021. Senator Hanson would not return our calls. Senators Cortez Masto and Rosen; Rep. Dina Titus supported our efforts. Senators Donate and Scheible spent a considerable amount of time listening to us and learning about our concerns. It is important to remember who works hard to make educated decisions.
