We are so excited to introduce you to the newest member of our SEP team, Dr. Maddie Frizzell! Dr. Maddie is a born and raised Texan. She grew up showing Arabians and that sparked her interest in equine sports medicine. She completed her bachelors degree at Oklahoma State University and continued her education at Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine where she obtained her DVM degree. Following graduation, she completed a year long internship in Stephenville, Texas at Signature Equine Hospital. She’s excited to be serving the equine community in the greater Houston area, overseeing the Smith Equine Performance Rehab Center and seeing patients in the field.

We are excited to share one of the many different treatment possibilities of the RLT Laser and Saltwater Spa…
This mare came to us with a severe case of habronemiasis, or commonly referred to as a summer sore. Dr. Smith prescribed some topical ointments and weekly regimen in our Saltwater Spa and RLT Laser treatments. We began to see very significant results early on and after week 3 she was ready to have the necrotic tissue surgically removed.
After this surgery she has continued with her therapies and has made incredible progress in just a little over a month. She still has a long way to go, but we love seeing the results that our treatments can provide!

Over the past few decades manufacturers have introduced new equine diagnostic techniques and enhanced existing imaging modalities. Today’s equine veterinarians have many tools at hand to help pinpoint problem areas and diagnose issues. Some of these modalities are portable enough to take on a farm call, while others are only accessible at clinics or hospitals. We pride ourselves in providing concierge service for our clients, including diagnostic imaging.

Proper saddle fitting is important for both horse and rider. Anatomically, that region consists of skin with thousands of nerve endings, the epaxial muscles, the spinal vertebrae, and the junction of the ribs and vertebrae. Improper saddle fit can cause pain in your horse and decreased performance.

“The focus of the practice is sports medicine and I am proud that my staff and I provide a concierge type service for clients. It’s so important for my practice and my clients that I am always reachable by text or a phone call. I consider myself part of their team, and they trust that I will do everything I can to support them. I don’t have special office hours at a desk; I don’t require clients to call a secretary. If they have a question or need an appointment, they simply have to text or call and we do our best to assist everyone. The sports medicine care that we provide on a day-to-day basis typically consists of a lameness evaluation of the patient that may require watching the horse under saddle or flexing and jogging. Then I’ll do diagnostic imaging as needed that may include X-rays or ultrasounds. Some treatment options include joint injections, ultrasound-guided joint injections, shockwave, mobile PRP injections (Prostride), and upper airway scoping.” - Dr. Clayton Smith

Proactive treatment is the best treatment you can provide to your horse. The most important thing is to be proactive and treat soreness before you are treating lameness. Doing the preventative care to include routine evaluations can help to determine when equine athletes are sore versus waiting until they actually become lame.

Dr Smith offers services for pre-purchase exams, consultations on complex lameness and medical issues of the equine athlete, preparing performance horses for competition, and managing their health care at horse shows. Making himself available in this capacity gives our clients the competitive advantage of continuity of care for each individual horse.

I think that nutrition is hugely important to all horses, and especially our athletes. The equine diet is another opportunity to relieve inflammation and help athletes manage oxidative stress with antioxidants, etc. Nutrition has a role in every case that I see. And specifically in terms of the healing process, it can either work with you or against you. I want what the horse is consuming on a daily basis to work with what I’m trying to accomplish through veterinary medicine. Keeping the diet simple and forage-based is almost always the best way to feed any horse, and then knowing what is effective from a sports med standpoint to help with muscle recovery or to gain weight or to help stiff joints—the therapeutic nutrition can be very helpful and is often overlooked.

The majority of the sports medicine treatments can now be done in a mobile setting. This allows me to care for patients at competitions or training facilities; they don’t have to haul to me. My veterinary truck is basically a hospital on wheels and fully equipped for x-rays, ultrasounds, regenerative medicine injections, shockwave, and lameness evaluations.

We offer Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy which is a regenerative therapy which uses the horse’s platelets to assist the healing process. Blood is collected from the horse and passed through a filter that concentrates and separates the platelets. The PRP is then injected into the injured area.
