Don't let a missing marker X-out your results! 😉 Use a physical marker on the table next to the patient for clear and accurate labeling. A physical marker is best, as digital markers don’t always transfer properly. Avoid a hold, place those markers!

Does your patient need a cardiologist’s expert eye? 🩺 Our board-certified cardiologists are available Mon-Fri from 8am-5pm to review your cases.

What do they read? Thoracic radiographs, ECGs, and echocardiograms.

Focus on the heart: For thoracic X-rays, they'll evaluate heart-related structures. Consider having a general radiologist assess other areas of the image.

Need to chat? Our cardiologists are available for consultations and addendums on any cases they read, at no additional charge.

During an ultrasonography scan, a continuous stream of live, digitized data is obtained and can be transferred into a cine loop. Cine loops are short video clips that capture the movement of structures during the exam. They are crucial for evaluating dynamic structures like the heart and its valves.

The Cine loops can be stored digitally and then shared with the VitalRADS team of Board-Certified Specialists for full evaluation and diagnosis.

What is collimation? It's the process of narrowing the X-ray beam to only cover the area being examined.

Why is it important?:
- Reduces radiation dose making it safer for the staff and patient
- Produces clearer images
- Helps ensure accurate diagnoses

How does it work?:
A collimator produces a light beam that mirrors the X-ray beam, to help make sure only the necessary area is exposed.

Dr. Poteet's BELIEVE IT OR NOT! (Posted Mondays and Fridays all October)

Thanks to a form of X-rays, scientists were able to see the double-helix structure of DNA in the early 1950s.

Although James Watson and Francis Crick are typically credited with the discovery of the structure of DNA, their breakthrough would not have been possible without the X-ray crystallography performed by chemist Rosalind Franklin.

X-ray crystallography involves striking a crystal’s surface with X-rays and then looking at the “scattering” pattern generated as a result. By working backwards mathematically, scientists can reconstruct the structure of small molecules from these intricate patterns. Rosalind Franklin’s X-ray diffraction work was crucial in unraveling the structure of DNA. Her “Photograph 51” (pictured below) provided key evidence for the double helix model. Despite her significant contributions, her work was not fully recognized until after her death.

Dr. Poteet's BELIEVE IT OR NOT! (Posted Mondays and Fridays all October)

Thomas Edison's X-ray lightbulb was a unique experiment in which he attempted to create a light source that emitted X-rays. He believed that by using a special type of glass and filling the bulb with a specific gas, he could produce a light that would emit X-rays.

While Edison's experiment did not result in a successful X-ray lightbulb, it did lead to further research into the properties of X-rays. His work helped to advance our understanding of this new and mysterious form of radiation.

Edison's eventual fear of X-rays was largely due to his own experiences with radiation exposure. He had exposed himself and his assistants to significant levels of radiation during his X-ray experiments, leading to health problems. This firsthand experience made him aware of the dangers of X-rays and prompted him to abandon his research.

Dr. Poteet's BELIEVE IT OR NOT! (Posted Mondays and Fridays all October)

X-rays were featured in circuses and carnivals shortly after their discovery in 1895. The novelty and mysterious nature of this new technology made it a popular attraction for sideshows and fairs. People were fascinated by the ability to see their bones and other internal structures, and it was often presented as a miraculous or even supernatural phenomenon.

However, it's important to note that the early use of X-rays in circuses and carnivals was not without its risks. Radiation exposure was not fully understood at the time, and many people were exposed to harmful levels of radiation. As more information about the dangers of X-rays became available, their use in entertainment settings gradually declined.

Dr. Poteet's BELIEVE IT OR NOT! (Posted Mondays and Fridays all October)

Wilhelm Röntgen accidentally discovered X-rays in 1895 while conducting experiments with cathode rays — streams of electrons in vacuum tubes. Röntgen's most famous X-ray image is the one he took of his wife, Anna Bertha Ludwig's hand. On December 22, 1895, he placed her hand between the cathode ray tube and a photographic plate. The resulting image, which was later published in a scientific journal, showed the bones of her hand clearly visible through the skin as well as her wedding ring. When Anna saw the image, she exclaimed, “I have seen my death!”

This image was groundbreaking because it was the first time that human anatomy had been visualized in such detail without the need for surgery. It quickly captured the public's imagination and helped to establish X-rays as a revolutionary new medical tool.
