Keeping your dog entertained and mentally stimulated is just as important as keeping them physically healthy.

An excellent way to enrich and entertain your pup is through interactive food puzzle toys! 🧩

Interactive toys which usually incorporate food that a dog can access by solving a "puzzle" are fantastic for curbing boredom, reducing anxiety, and slowing down ravenous eaters, among other benefits.

One of the most common interactive dog toys on the market is the Kong, a hollow chew toy you can fill with your pup's favourite food or treats. But this is just one of many examples of puzzle toys for dogs. There are also grid toys with sliding pieces and trapdoors that reveal hidden treat compartments, puzzle balls you can fill with treats, and many more!
(The puzzle pictured below is Nina Ottosson by Outward Hound)

Interactive Toy Benefits:
They offer mental stimulation-
When dogs don't get enough mental stimulation they may fall into bad habits such as barking or chewing things they shouldn't.

Your pup will eat slower-
Eating too quickly may cause your dog to vomit or experience physical discomfort. In extreme cases it can even cause a dangerous medical condition known as Bloat (sometimes fatal). If your pup is a fast eater, a puzzle toy is a great way to help slow them down. Rather than stuffing puzzle toys with treats, use them as a delivery method for your dog's regular meals. Whether your dog eats kibble, wet food, or a combination, there are toys out there that will accommodate any food.
Another alternative is a slow-feed dog bowl. These bowls are similar to interactive toys, but instead of "solving" a puzzle by moving pieces around, these bowls have built-in ridges that prevent dogs from gobbling up huge mouthfuls of food quickly.

They reduce anxiety-
Anxiety can be common in dogs and can have many possible causes; including being left alone or a fear of an unfamiliar setting. Fortunately, giving your dog a job to focus on is a powerful way to reduce anxiety, if only temporarily.
Puzzle toys are a great way to do this, fill the toy with a treat your dog deems very rewarding!

They provide a distraction-
Whether you need to take a phone call, cook, or complete some household chores, providing a puzzle toy is a great way to distract your dog while you get things done. When your dog is focused on the puzzle toy, there's a good chance you'll be able to steal a few minutes for yourself without having to worry about undesirable behaviors.

You may have to try out a few different puzzle toys before finding one that is perfect for your dog. If you're unsure where to begin, ask our staff next time you stop by our lobby!
We have tons of recommendations and even offer some amazing enrichment toys for sale in our retail area.

Did you know?
The idea that wolf packs are led by a merciless dictator, or alpha wolf, comes from old studies of captive wolves.
In the wild, wolf packs are simply families!

If you’ve ever heard the term “alpha wolf”, you might imagine snapping fangs and fights to the death for dominance.
You might also assume that wolves have a ‘pecking order’ or fight for resources.
When I’m reality, that couldn’t be farther from the truth with wolves in the wild.

When keeping wolves in captivity, humans typically throw together adult wolves with no shared kinship. In these cases, a dominance hierarchy arises, but it’s the animal equivalent of what might happen in a human prison, not the way wolves behave when they are left to their own devices.

In contrast, wild wolf packs are usually made up of a breeding male, a breeding female and their offspring from the past two or three years that have not yet set out on their own.

In the late 1980s and 1990s world renowned researcher, Mech, observed a pack every year at Ellesmere Island in Canada. His study, published in 1999, was among the first multiyear research on a single pack over time. It revealed that all members of the pack defer to the breeding male and regardless of s*x or age, all pack members besides that male defer to the breeding female. (Wolves typically mate for life & exhibit deep emotional connections within their packs!) The youngest pups also submit to their older siblings, though when food is scarce, parents feed the young first, much as human parents might tend to a young infant.

Wolf packs are structured much like a human family.

Fighting for dominance is basically unheard of in a typical pack. When offspring are two to three years old, they leave the pack in search of mates, aiming to start their own pack. The alpha wolf notion of challenging dad for dominance of the existing pack just isn’t in the wolf playbook.

Today, a lot of trainers and dog owners practice dominance theory.
Dominance based training methods assume dogs are committed to a battle of supremacy and constant challenge with their human family members.
(These theories have been refuted by wolf biologists and if this theory is no longer considered true for wolves, then how can it be considered true for our domestic dogs?)
This idea is incorrect and not supported by scientific study. Trainers advising families to take charge of the pack by eating first, walking through doors first, occupying a higher position and worst of all, pinning the dogs into submission are ignoring the current scientific research and subjecting dogs to unnecessary and cruel training methods.
This can also have devastating effects on the dog’s bond with their humans and risk escalating aggressive or fearful behaviors.

At The Oaks Dog Ranch our trainers would never suggest or practice dominance theory. We value your dogs health, well being, safety and learning- as well as educating you, as a dog owner on subjects such as these.

Boredom can lead to undesirable behaviors!

Rollin’ around without a care in the world!

Due to the upcoming 4th of July celebrations (doggy doomsday), a lot of paw-rents have asked us what we use to help ease the pups in our care during stressful events.

1. Tons of enrichment and exercise during the day prior to stressful events, like firework celebrations!
Wearing out their brain using enrichment puzzles, snuffle mats, lickimats, Kongs or West Paw Toppl Bowls, along with physical exercise can all help tire out your dog. Resulting in a calmer, less anxious dog when the fireworks begin.
2. Adaptil Pheromone diffusers and blanket sprays!
Adaptil works by releasing pheromones- mother dogs communicate with their puppies through natural messages released into the air. These "comforting messages“ are called dog appeasing pheromones. These odorless messages are only perceived by dogs and can help ease and relax dogs who experience anxiety, or during stressful situations.
3. As needed CBD treats!
(Of course, we only administer CBD treats with parent permission.)
If interested in what brand of treats we use- ask our receptionist at checkout in our lobby, or give us a call!

We hope these tips help you and your beloved dogs have a happy & safe Independence Day! ⭐️

Dog Training Red Flags-
Red flags to look out for when searching for a professional dog trainer…
-Does not advertise education or certification!
-Guarantees they can fix ANY issue for you, double red flag if they can guarantee it will be fixed in a certain time frame!
-Does not place emphasis on educating the owners as well!
-Suggests that dogs learn differently than other species!
-They say “positive reinforcement doesn’t work for some dogs” -in all reality positive reinforcement works for ALL beings.
-Immediate use of aversive tools such as slip leads, prong collars, shock collars!
-They force dogs into stressful situations to help them ‘get over their fears’ - this is called flooding and is NOT beneficial to their well-being!
-They cannot tell you the difference between behavior suppression and behavior modification!
-They do not understand basic canine body language and/or do not believe in using treats as a form of reward!
-They use the terms alpha or pack leader!
-They believe your dogs should just ‘obey’ you out of respect!
-They say “harnesses cause a dog to pull on leash”!
-They believe in punishment/holding your dog accountable- this is just as excuse to take out frustrations on an animal that simply does not understand!

At The Oaks Dog Ranch our training programs are designed to meet the very high standards set by The Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers.
We value your dogs health, well being, safety and learning- as well as educating you, as a dog owner.

Did you know The Oaks Dog Ranch’s trainers hold one of the most esteemed and impressive dog training certifications in the WORLD?

The Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers® (CCPDT®), established in 2001, is the leading independent certifying organization for the dog training profession. The CCPDT is the leader in the development of rigorous exams to demonstrate mastery of humane, science-based dog training practices. Thousands of dog training professionals worldwide maintain the CCPDT's certifications as a mark of high professional distinction.
Sadly, the dog training industry is unregulated. Which means ANYONE can claim to be a professional dog trainer, but not just anyone has the knowledge or education needed to train your dogs effectively. The CCPDT is actively trying to work towards regulating this industry.

Why Work With a CPDT-KA ?
Certified Professional Dog Trainers are experienced trainers who are committed to continuing education and professional excellence. You can be assured that your CPDT-KA training professional upholds the highest standards in the dog training industry. Choosing to work with a Certified Professional Dog Trainer confirms your commitment to working with a trainer who is dedicated to education, remains current in the advances in training and demonstrates a proficient level of knowledge. The CPDT-KA must recertify every three years by obtaining continuing education units available through approved educational opportunities, or by retaking the exam.
Only trainers who have passed the exam and who meet the CCPDT's experience and continuing education requirements can earn and maintain these credentials.

How does one achieve the CPDT certification?
In order to qualify to take the KA (Knowledge Assessed) exam, a trainer must have acquired over 300 hours of dog training experience, 75% must be actual teaching hours, a minimum of a high school diploma, references from a veterinarian, a client and a colleague who holds the CPDT-KA certification.
If the prospective candidate is eligible to take the exam, they then must pass a critical, demanding, 4-hour exam of 250 questions covering applied learning theory, instructional and teaching skills, canine behavior, ethology, and well-being, professional skills, ethics, and laws & regulations.
A Certified Professional Dog Trainer must continue their education and keep current on the latest educational materials and research.

The CCPDT's certification exam and recommended study materials have been developed by leading industry professionals and are updated regularly to maintain a consistent level of integrity. Since 2001, the CCPDT has been the ONLY independent and
psychometrically sound certification organization for professional dog trainers.

From the wise words of another worldwide known CPDT-KA trainer-
"Using force to change the behavior and feelings of another sentient being is not power.
It is an abject demonstration of one's lack of power"
- Matt Beisner ‘The Zen Dog’ (Host of Dog: Impossible on Disney+ & Nat Geo Wild)
