This is a report from a cardiologist….. while we agree that pets with other medical issues should be treated early, dentistry is NOT an elective procedure. It’s is part of regular preventative care in all cases and in many a critical medical procedure. Further, numerous studies in dogs, cats, and humans demonstrate a link between dental disease and systemic issues (including cardiac disease) (admittedly mostly human and without direct cause and affect). Further, others suggest that dental care improves systemic health. Finally, one veterinary study showed that dogs with cardiac disease have minimal increase in anesthesia risk. To all vet professionals… please stop considering dentistry elective, until we as a profession embrace proper dental care as important, our clients won’t either.

Kona is an adorable 4 month old Welsh Corgi puppy that was referred to us due to a swollen left jaw and for the swollen area being extremely painful. The owner didn’t know of anything traumatic where she could have hurt herself. We were not able to examine Kona’s mouth while she was awake due to how painful she was. It was decided to put Kona under anesthesia so we could see what was going on with that area. Kona had significant swelling of her left mandible (jaw bone). The area appeared to be infected so it was decided to extract the teeth in the area of the inflammation (309 and 310), biopsy the bone and take a sample for culture. Once the teeth were extracted Kona felt better within a few hours of extraction. The bone biopsy came back as osteomyelitis (bone infection) and the culture revealed three different types of bacteria. We treated Kona with a longer than normal course of antibiotics since her infection was in the bone. Thankfully, after extracting the teeth and starting the medications Kona was acting like a normal puppy again. When she came and saw us for her 2 week recheck she was back to her happy and healthy self! No one knows for sure what Kona did to herself to cause the infection but she is a happy and healthy puppy now.

Earnhart is a 14 year old Jack Russell Terrier who came to see us because the owner said that he seemed painful on the left side of his face. He had also recently started turning his head when he was eating.
When we did his dental procedure we did find that he had some periodontal disease but he also had lesions on the gums that touched the teeth on the left side of his mouth. These lesions are called “kissing lesions” and are most likely from a disease called Canine Chronic Ulcerative Stomatitis. This is a very painful disease. It appears to be an immune-mediated disease, almost like a contact allergy to plaque. The teeth in that area were extracted and his owner said he was back to acting like a puppy again when he came back for the 2 week recheck.

The key to keeping this disease under control is strict plaque control. In order to prevent the lesions from coming back after a cleaning, plaque needs to be prevented with aggressive homecare. If aggressive homecare is not able to be performed, full-mouth extractions may be necessary. With full-mouth extractions, patients no longer have a source for plaque to accumulate. This procedure is typically curative and patients show much improvement afterwards. Despite not having teeth, the benefits of decreased inflammation greatly outweigh the lack of teeth, and pets are able to eat pain free and live healthy lives.

Here is one of our cute patients, Tuppence. She was 5.5 months old when she came to see us with a cleft hard and soft palate. There had already been one attempt at closure about 3 weeks prior to coming to see Dr. Holloway. There was quite a bit of closure from the first attempt but it did not close completely. Tuppence was still having issues with sneezing and snorting after drinking since her palate did not close completely. Dr. Holloway was able to get the defect closed and everything had completely healed at the 2 week recheck! Tuppence’s owner said that she was doing great and not snorting after drinking anymore.

Lucky is a 10 year old kitty we saw recently. He usually goes outside at night, when he came in one morning his owner noticed that he was licking his lips and pawing at his face. She took him to the ER and it was noticed that he had a fractured tooth. Lucky came to us and the dental x-rays revealed severe tooth resorption causing the crown of the tooth to be weakened. We completed the modified crown amputation and removed the source of Lucky's pain. Lucky is feeling much better now!

This is little 5.5 pound Daisy Mae, she came to see us for a tooth abscess. She has a heart murmur and mom was very worried about her having anesthesia. Once Daisy Mae was under anesthesia we found 10 teeth that needed to be extracted. Daisy Mae did great under anesthesia, recovered from anesthesia quickly and is going to feel much better now!

Mr Paris came to see us yesterday due to having an abscessed canine tooth. We found a few other issues that were causing him pain. We found some pretty advanced tooth resorption lesions along with the infected canine teeth. Hopefully with those teeth gone, he will be feeling much better soon!

Mya came to see us today for her crown placement. She had a fractured canine tooth and a root canal was performed on a few weeks ago. Due to the damage she did to the tooth, a crown was placed to protect her tooth to prevent further damage.
