Even the puppies are chilly and need some extra warmth!

Temperatures up here in the UP of Michigan have dipped well into the double digits below freezing! The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is more than equipped to handle this climate, actually prefer it over the heat. As long as they have shelter to go into if they choose, they’re all good! That being said, this litter of 5 week old puppies are not quite set to brave these frigid temperatures.

They’ve been “working” outside with mom the last 2 1/2 weeks, and have been quite toasty with a heat lamp in their calf hutch. But when it gets THIS cold, it’s just not enough. That means all 10 of these little morsels, plus mom, are in my house for the next three days until this polar vortex leaves. Are they adorable? Yes! But they also stink like 💩. So. Much. 💩. Stay warm folks!

Here we go guys, our first really cold snap of winter. They’re predicting feel like temperatures bottoming out into the double digits BELOW zero! 🥶

A lot of people are very concerned with their livestock and their capability to power through this. For the average HEALTHY animal, they’ll be able to make it through with minimal modifications necessary. I can guaranty my livestock will take this far better than I will! 🤭

First and foremost; any animal must have adequate shelter in this. That means a solid break between them and the elements. Deep bedding will also help to keep them nice and snuggly. Straw makes a wonderful option.

Second; double down on the amount of hay your animals have access to. Think free choice at this point. The simple act of digesting and ruminating helps keep their bodies warmer in the cold. Don’t forget to offer water several times per day! If you want to be “extra” feel free to bring warm water with a touch of molasses in it.

Thirdly; this is another reason to keep your animals healthy and well maintained. A healthy animal can withstand extreme temperatures in either direction. Livestock shouldn’t require heat lamps or blankets in the cold. Of course the young and old have more of a struggle, but the average aged animal should be able to tough right through it. Just like your farm equipment; keep it well maintained and it will last you longer. Don’t wait until there’s a problem to tend to it.

To all my fellow farmers and farmHers getting ready to jump into the frozen tundra; we got this! Take breaks to come in and warm up if you need to. Dress warm, dress in layers, and cover up every inch of skin as possible. And remember; this is just a temporary test of our fortitude. 💪 🧑‍🌾 👩‍🌾 👨‍🌾 🥶 ❄️

It’s been feeling more like spring here in the U.P. of Michigan and less like winter. I took advantage of these moderate temperatures and got the barn ready for lambing and kidding season. My sheep are due to start lambing in early February, so today I mucked out stalls and made sure the CCTV (our camera system in the barn) was in good working order. It’s essential to learn to work Mother Nature and not against her. She tends to be moody. 🤭

Not an easy choice either this one, but it’s time for some cuts to be made around here…….

“Lily” is an Oberhasli doe that’s about 6 years old. Easy kidder and great milker. Easy keeper. Herd queen, but respectful to people. Exposed to buck a buck for 2025 kidding. Daggett MI.

This gal is back on the market, through no fault of her own. “Sunny” is approximately 3-4 years old, a medium sized dairy goat, and kidded twins last season with ease. Nice milker, and has been exposed for 2025 kidding. PM for further details!
