Nearing 75 yrs I will observe that the environment shapes the man as does the stuff he is made of, "What you are is where you were when" (Dr. Massey) My oldest memory is being in a cotton field, the only white person in the field, age 4 and hearing "don't lets that whites baby gets burnt" (translation: keep the white baby under the wagon so he doesn't get sunburned), raised by the veterans of WWII with guns, dogs and horses, received weapons instruction in the public school in the 5th grade, served 30 years as a professional soldier, 20 years as a horse breeder, a life time hunter, bird dog trainer, horse trainer. I am grateful for my three score and ten. Sadly, most folks living like lemmings on top of each other in urban areas with wireless, smart phones, security alarms, direct tv, credit cards, personal trainers, massage therapists, manicurists, car wash memberships and frequent flyer miles, etc, etc ....and driving much too fast ....and completely disconnected from the soil and animal husbandry ....are being shaped by a different environment than the one I was so fortunate to know. But there is still courage, love and patriotism.
