Kristen Hampton WBTV Good News

Ginny was removed from a hoarding situation and taken to a rescue. But no one would be her friend. Then something kind of crazy happened.

I spent the day trodding through chicken poo to bring you this beautiful story. They still have no idea exactly what happened here. But it's tonight's Good News at 5:45 :) READ THE FULL STORY>> http://bit.ly/2DBopHX

Carolina Waterfowl Rescue

We have another story. It's long as well so get settled in.

This is Guinevere, Ginny for short. She came to us from a hoarder. At her former home she wasn't sure if she was going to have food or safety. Her companions were killed and she was alone.

We drove a long ways from the rescue to bring her back to safety. We were so thrilled to give her a better life.

We already had three black swans and we figured she would be tickled to finally have a friend again. She had been alone for years. We were dismayed however when the three swans bullied, chased and rejected her.

Hurricane Matthew hit and we got busy. Many of the coastal areas were being evacuated but some black swans came into the rescue to seek shelter from that storm. We were offering a place for people to stash their animals who were evacuating.

Ginny was finally was able to strike up a friendship. Just when she made a new friend we had to send them back and she wasn't able to go with them. :( she was sad and alone again.

She started coming up to the house and would talk to her human friends. We felt bad for her so we let her go into an Aviary in the barn so that she would have a place where she wouldn't have to worry about being chased around. She seemed content in there but little did we know she had a plan.

Our goal is always obviously to keep them safe but we also want them to have companionship and to be happy. We were striking out again trying to make friends for her but we gave her as much attention as we could and brought her treats.

Ginny has been in the barn for a few months when she started building a nest. We thought it was really cute that she was building a little straw nest to snuggle down in. Eventually she laid an egg. She has been lonely for so long and she so enjoyed the egg. We usually remove all the eggs every day but we didn't see the harm in letting her keep it. It's our policy to not allow animals to breed but she is the only swan in the aviary so what's the harm? It couldn't be fertile.

It seems she finally had a purpose and something to keep her happy. I was gone over the holidays to visit my daughter who was coming home from overseas in the military. When I returned we decided to check the eggs because at this point they would be starting to get rotten and we would have to remove them. I was surprised to find out that they were not rotten, so we went into candle them. Lo and behold there were babies inside. Developed past the point of us feeling comfortable discarding them.

In my best "Jeff Golblum" voice all I could think was "life finds a way" and that scene from Jurassic park where female dinosairs learned to make babies. it's not possible for s***m to be stored that long, so was she asking to be let out and coming back? The male swan hated her and chased her away. It's a mystery!!

At first I thought we shouldn't say anything because I know we will be chastised for the mistake. We are human and we do make mistakes. As adamant as we are about not breeding in some way I feel relief for Ginny who outsmarted us so they she could finally have the companionship she so desperately desired. In the interest of transparency we are telling her story and hope everyone will forgive us.

Her Cygnets are due January 31. These will be the first swans born here. (we have hatched rescues when the parents were killed) So while it's a bit of bad luck we are excited about watching the new arrivals come into the world. We needed something good to counteract out streak of bad luck and we will cherish these babies just as Ginny does.

Stay tuned everyone for more on Ginny and the babies. We will post updates as they progress.

Little Missouri Homestead

DIY AFTERNOON PROJECT:

CHICKEN WATER HEATER:

With temperatures dropping below freezing on the homestead, it was time to get the animals' water heaters up and going. We decided to make a new water heater for our chickens this winter using a cinder block. The cinder block is 8x8x16 and sits on top of a 8x16 cement paver. Part of the center wall of the cinder block was knocked out using a tile saw blade on our skill saw and a hammer and chisel. Grooves were cut into the bottom of the cinder block to allow for the light cord and drainage should any water get inside the block. The top self is made from a scrap piece of cement backer board and is held in place by a couple of old bolts we had laying around. By using a concrete drill bit, we were able to drill some holes into the block and insert the bolts into the holes which LOCK THE SHELF in place. The light assembly was purchased at Lowes and we used a 60w bulb here (it's all we had at the time), but recommend trying a 40w first. If you still have frozen water after 40 W then up the wattage to a 60w bulb. This should make the chickens happy in the morning. If you have any questions about this project, don't hesitate to ask. Happy Homesteading!
