Dogs are known to be creatures of habit.

They will often continue in the same routine over and over, whether it's feeding time or playing fetch in the yard.

As you already learned from previous posts, polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a progressive, hereditary disorder that causes cysts to form on the kidneys.

These cysts cause the kidneys to become enlarged and gradually stop working.

Unfortunately, it can be fatal in cats because it affects their ability to regulate fluids and electrolytes.

Polycystic kidney disease can be cured in some cases if detected early enough but it cannot be cured if not caught until later stages of progression or when irreversible damage has already been done.

In these cases, treatment is focused on helping the cat maintain its quality of life as long as possible through fluid therapy and other treatments such as dietary changes.

But hey, if your cat has PKD - Don’t worry! Modern-day veterinary medicine will allow you and your feline friend to have just as good of a life experience together as if the problem didn’t exist in the first place!

In humans, polycystic kidney disease is a genetic disorder that causes clusters of cysts to grow in the kidney.

This condition causes the kidneys to enlarge over time and lose function.

The same goes for Persian cats!

Some data suggest that genetically, Persian cats are more likely than other breeds to develop polycystic kidneys (PKD).

With this in mind, it is important to do frequent check-ups on your Persian's health and stay on the look for symptoms, such as:

Lethargy
Weight loss
Reduced appetite
Vomiting
Increased thirst
Increased urination

If you have suspicions about such persistent symptoms, contact a vet immediately!
