Types of Leopard Gecko Morphs
Since breeders continue to develop new variations on leopard gecko characteristics, the list of morphs and morph combinations is ever-expanding.
If youβre shopping for a leopard gecko as your new pet, know that prices can vary wildly depending on the characteristics of the lizard in question.
Here are just few morph categories that we will cover in this our treat :
Normal & High Yellows
Albino Morphs
Striped Morphs
Hypo/Hyper Melanistic Morphs
Blizzard Morphs
Patternless Morphs
and tons of others!
Some morphs may only be available from unique breeders, and you may even find some inconsistencies in the ways different breeders classify and name certain leopard gecko morphs.
This should help you to become more informed about leopard gecko morphs, whether youβre just curious about different reptile varieties or youβre in the market for a leo of your own.

Continuation on Morph Terminology
All reptiles
Co-Dominant Traits: This describes an instance where an offspring displays expressions of two different but equally dominant traits.
Phenotype: A word describing an organismβs observable characteristics.
Genotype: This pertains to the organismβs genetic makeup.
Line Bred: This is when geckos with particular characteristics are bred with one another with the goal of producing offspring with the same (or improved) traits. Line bred traits are also referred to as polygenic traits.
Out-Crossing: This refers to the breeding of reptiles displaying different characteristics. This is generally done for two reasons. First, to minimize the risk of genetic defects through diversification. It is also done in hopes of introducing a new trait or having a certain outcome as far as appearance of the offspring.
Homozygous: Homozygous leopard geckos carry two copies of the same trait, one from each parent.
Heterozygous: Heterozygous varieties carry one copy of a normal or wild trait, and one copy of a recessive or designer trait.
Morph Terminology
Before we get into the different types of morphs out there, itβs a good idea to have a general understanding of the vocabulary youβll come across as you learn about and shop for leopard geckos. Reptile genetics (and genetics in general) is a very complex area of study, so keep in mind that these are very simple and basic definitions.
Genetic Traits: Characteristic, such as eye color or size, that are determined by genetics.
Recessive Traits: These are traits that come from a recessive gene. In order for recessive traits to be expressed in offspring, they must be passed on from both parents.
Dominant traits: Dominant traits show up even when only one parent has the dominant gene. When one parent carries a recessive gene and the other carries a dominant gene, the dominant characteristic will typically show up in the offspring

A MORPH
A βleopard gecko morphβ is simply a variation in size, coloring, pattern, or other physical features of a leopard gecko. Some morphs are caused by random mutations. Through selective breeding, though, a large (and growing) number of new leopard gecko morphs have been created.
All reptiles will explore many of the existing leopard gecko morphs, and even a couple that are still being developed. Note that there are many varieties and combinations of leopard gecko morphs, and the potential for still more is practically endless.
35 Awesome Leopard Gecko Morphs (With Pictures) The Complete Guide
Leopard Geckos are easily one of the most beloved types of reptiles. They are friendly, docile, and fairly easy to take care of. They are especially attractive among lizards, and even reptile-haters often find them to be irresistibly cute.
There are also TONS of different types of leopard geckos (most commonly called morphs), so every reptile owner is sure to find a variation that they love.
β¦but what are morphs?
Follow All reptiles to get to know these 35+morphs every single day for the next 35 days.
What do leopard geckos eat, and when?
Leopard geckos eat a diet of live insects, which can include crickets, 'calci worms', waxworms and small locusts (no bigger than the size of your gecko's head). You'll also need to provide fresh vegetables and clean water to keep these insects hydrated.
You should feed young geckos every day and adults every other day. You'll need to top up your gecko's nutrients with supplements, too. Ask your vet for advice on the best ones to give your pet
Hiding places and flooring
To mimic your leopard gecko's natural environment, you'll need to provide hiding places and low, sturdy branches or rocks for climbing.
The floor covering, known as the substrate, also needs to be natural to minimise the risk of impaction - a potentially fatal issue where particles become lodged inside your gecko's belly and cause a blockage. Never use 'caci-sand' or beech wood chips, as your leopard gecko can't safely eat these.
Temperature, heat lamps, UV lights and humidity
Leopard geckos use their environment to regulate their body temperature. That's why it's important to provide a 'thermogradient', with a heat lamp at one end and a cooler area at the other. Use thermostats to regulate the temperatures. You'll also need to remember:
Basking area: this should remain between 28 and 30 Β°C during the day, and the cool end 24 to 26 Β°C.
At night: turn off the heat lamp, but use a heat mat or ceramic heat lamp to ensure the temperature doesn't dip below 18 Β°C.
Dry environment: leopard geckos need a relatively dry environment. Measure the humidity at the cool end of the tank with a hygrometer - it should be between 30 and 40%.
Ultraviolet light: your gecko will need low levels of ultraviolet light. A two to five% UVB bulb will provide this, allowing them to make vitamin D inside their body - an essential mineral that allows your gecko to store and use calcium.

Setting up a vivarium for your leopard gecko
Your leopard gecko will quickly outgrow a reptile starter kit, so when you're buying new equipment it's better to get a large enclosure from the start.
There are a few essential things your leopard gecko vivarium will need:
An adult gecko needs a tank at least 60cm long, 40cm high and 30cm deep.
To ensure bacteria doesn't build up, the tank needs to be easy to clean and well ventilated
On this page, you'll find everything you need to know about caring for your new leopard gecko. To keep your pet healthy and happy, it's important to make sure their set-up mimics their natural habitat as closely as possible.
