The demands of my job necessitate long hours away from home, leaving my dog Louis to his own devices. Although he is well-behaved and house-trained, I fear that the prolonged periods of isolation, often spanning 10-12 hours daily, may have a negative impact on his happiness. With dog daycare services being financially out of reach for me at present, I am contemplating having him go with another family but that’s my baby!!

I could have lost my baby today 🥺
She ran off because I left the gate slightly open while loading up the car. Completely my fault, but she has always stays in the yard up until this point/and I had both hands full, so I didn’t completely latch it for the 3 steps away to my car.

Long story short, as soon as she slipped out and I told her to stay, she darted off and was having a hay day exploring all the scents and new territory throughout our street neighbor’s yards! I was chasing her with a stick trying to get her to play, but this trick wasn’t working like it does in the backyard— she was way more interested in her little adventure.

I knew not to yell (even though I was scared as hell as I continuously lost sight of her), but kept a playful tone. I then realized even when I was able to corner her in some areas, she was way too fast for me to ever catch her…😔

My heart was frantic and the busy street was nearing as we got further and further away from my house. I was SO desperate and felt so helpless! I quickly thought, ‘Ishould have her chase me!’ This idea had to have been the Lord because I’ve never done that or read that before, but thank God it worked! Up until the gate and then she still wouldn’t come in 😵‍💫 until I said the only code word— “look a friend!” (a bunny or squirrel) and this got her 🙌🏽

But geez louise! 😮‍💨 This mama heart can’t take this level of repeated panic! 🫨 My worst fear is losing her, especially to an avoidable tragedy! 💔🥺

But accidents do happen…so I just wondered if anyone else has had as much trouble with their Frenchie not coming when called, or running when accidentally getting out & had some success with retraining this behavior??

For context: I do walk and play with her 45 mins+ everyday, so it’s not for lack of exercise….Also, we did 6 mos of personal doggie training when she was little, but nothing off leash.

Any tips/tricks/suggestions are very much appreciated. ♥️
