* The Spotlight of the Week *

• T O O T S I E •

Tootsie is a standard size, brindle Scottish Highland Heifer. She joined the farm in May 2022 and was the very first cow to join On the Edge Farm.

Tootsie LOVES apples, corn, fresh orchard grasses and Farmer Mat.

She had the most beautiful markings.

Taking a moment to introduce ourselves to those of you who are new to our page. First of all, thank you for being here and supporting our family farm. Every like, heart, follow helps our farm grow and supports our family.

We are Mat and Ava - the farmers/owners of On the Edge Farm. We started our farm in October 2021, after searching for over 2 years for the property that felt like home.
We have three children - all girls ☺️ (not pictured as often to respect their privacy).

Mat and I did not grow up on a farm, in fact, we were both city kids that preferred designer clothes, vacations all over the world, wanted nice cars and a big fancy home.

We bought our first home together in 2015, right before we got married. Due to flooding in the backyard, we had to renovate the space… which lead us to putting the house on the market because the market was “hot”.
We sold our first home together and purchased a hidden gem on almost 2 acres, right in the middle of town. The property and home were in dire need of TLC. Everyone thought we were crazy for moving our kids to a run down, barely together home. But we had a vision and weren’t afraid of a little hard work. We loved this home, poured our time into creating an oasis for our family. Again, the universe had its own plans… our septic system backed up into our house and destroyed both of our bathrooms. Long story short, this lead to completely renovating our master bathroom and guest bathroom… which we did ourselves!!!
During this time, we knew in our hearts that our family was meant for more. We wanted more space and more opportunities for our family. But it was scary, we absolutely loved our home and the space we had created.

After months of looking at photos of the property on Zillow and thinking to ourselves, no way would this work, what would we even do with the space… We decided to check out the property with our realtor. Things moved VERY quickly after that. Others were now interested in the property too and we didn’t want to miss out on the opportunity, since so many others had slipped through our fingers in the past.
So we listed our little oasis, put an offer on the property - contingent of our home selling.

After that, it was a wild ride… lots of mountains to climb because the property was as so unique. But we sold our comforts and traded it in for a lifetime of work. Because of this, we knew we had to give it our all. We couldn’t do things slowly, we played our hand and now we needed to see it through. We had so many visions, and they kept evolving.

We chose this life for our kids. We jumped into an unknown world and decided to learn alongside our children. We chose this life because we wanted to create something different for the community, different opportunities for families to learn about being self-sustainable, growing your own food, respecting animals and the circle of life… raise them right, treat them well, and they in turn will take care of you.

Our family comes first. While we might live a busy life, but you can always find us at our children’s sporting events.

We are animals lovers through and through.
We are introverted extroverts. We balance each other out.
Together, Mat and I have climbed mountains we never would have dreamed of climbing. And let’s be real, we have weathered many, many storms.
Mat is a Marine Corps veteran. He is the backbone of our farm; without him, we would never have accomplished what we have so far.
He is a man of many talents. He is also full of an old soul’s wisdom… this quote from Mat has really stuck with me:
“It’s amazing what you can accomplish if you don’t let the limitations of other peoples expectations get to you.”

It’s okay to live outside the box, because if we were all the same square, what fun would that be?!

For those of you who have visited over the last couple of months - you have had the chance to meet Callum. Callum is a dun colored highland bull that is visiting until May to impregnate our heifer’s.
He is a handsome guy! Can’t wait for calves next year.
