Medical Corner
THE VET visit: Prepping for it!

What to expect but are often unlikely to get
SO ASK!!!🙌

Be friendly but inquisitive!
What are you observing about my dragon? Remember you are paying for this and you are your dragon’s advocate!!😇

Preparing for the Exotic VET preferred REPTILE specialist exotic) visit! MUST know their reptiles!!!!!

Prep before visit:
Prepare for your visit, don’t just go. You are your dragons only advocate!

They SHOULD ask:
Husbandry questions, how long you had your dragon, approximate age, where you adopted from, diet (what you are feeding and how often), p**p schedule, any issues or concerns.

-Do you have any questions or concerns? Write them down!
-AND take notes and ask questions if you don’t understand or even are doubting! You know your dragon best!
-AND ask for vets notes at discharge! They often do not just give them to you but should ALWAYS have them available to you if you ask for them! Keep a file!

F***l:
Bring a f***l sample if at all possible (be prepared to collect one in the car ride over!!😂 the fresher the better)!
They can be stored up to 48 hours if put in frig in fresh state. P**p that has been left for an over an hour or two is not going to be as useful.
You can simply collect it and put it in a plastic baggie and into the frig! 😬

THE EXAM:
-General level of alertness, responsiveness
-Eyes (reflex/vision/tracking)
Of note for us…they can’t see directly in front of them due to set of eyes (better to spot predators!
-Ears
-Mouth- looks inside…back of throat, teeth, gums, moisture, Jacobson glands
-Nostrils- clear and functional (not blocked)
-Cardiovascular- heartbeat (ideally doppler but rarely done!)
-Pulmonary- Lungs-watch breathing/respirations…effort, rapid? fullness and evenness of inspirations
-Gastrointestinal- belly check: fullness, fat pads, ovaries, hard areas, tender areas
-Integumentary: skin/scale check
-Musculoskeletal: Atrophy (sunken head “fat pad”),symmetry, movement, joint mobility, joint swelling/tenderness
-Urogential system: Cloaca/vent

F***l: everyone should get one done at bare minimum with well check and 6 months later. AND if p**ps become concerning!!

The p**p is a great way to help keep an eye on their health!! Future topic!!🙌😇

Section about labs and other studies to follow.

Please ask Question. Add your experiences, stories. I would love to make this series interactive!! 🥰🥰🥰

Check out:
Ask for vets notes from the visit!!
If any studies are done. Ask that those reports get sent to you. Vet should call with results but I have had to call to get them from several vets I went to😳

A double adoption!🙌📣📣
Elara now Minnie (BD) & Tumi (chameleon)💓💓

This sweet and amazing lady was referred to us by our mutual vet, Dr Tran🙌. Tina is know as the “Crazy Reptile Lady” there 🤣Unfortunately, she recently lost her beloved Bearded dragon to Lymphoma 😳😭😭😭

So she reached out. Timing could have not been more perfect. 🙌Sweet Elara now Minnie came to us sick and really needing lots of TLC so getting her to a loving home where all of her needs could get taken care of was ideal. Along came Tina who was very happy to take over her care!! She met up with Michelle at the vet office to get trained and away she went!

Now:
“Minnie is the sweetest bearded dragon with tough past. When I took over her medical care on December 10, she only weighed 273 grams, and you could count all of her ribs. She had no color, an upper respiratory infection, and pin worms. With the proper set up, and medical care, she is a healthy girl now! The vet is pleased and has cleared her. She has also put on almost 100 grams of weight in the past 4 weeks, and is weighing in at 361 grams! Minnie loves to eat, loves attention, and she is now living her best life! We are so happy to have rescued her”!

Tina also ended up adopting a chameleon as well🙌Tumi is now living his best set life as well! 😇

So it is our great pleasure to
Have a Tina join our family here at NTRR🙌🤗💖💖💖

We still have the fish that came with Solomon. Currently have him in a bucket.

If you have an extra tank that has a filter and bubbler, message me and you can come get this little cutie pie.
I just don’t have the experience with fish and want him/ her to go to someone who does.

Foster Update on Toothless the Mexican Black King Snake.

Toothless is consistently eating every two weeks, on a hopper rat or a small rat.

Toothless would eat 10 if I let him.
He has become a confident, gentle, curious and downright adorable snake.

So far, I have allowed Toothless to hang out in my hoodie, and he loved it. He does very well with a lot of enrichment activities inside and outside of his enclosure.

If you are interested in adopting Toothless, please contact Madison DuPont adoption/foster coordinator. +1 (337) 302-5039 text only
Madison will walk you through our adoption process, and guide you on the proper size enclosure, lighting, heating and handling.

Recommendations for an adult MBK
4x2x2 pvc enclosure
Led light
Radiant heat panel will a thermostat set at 85 to 90 degrees
Or halogen light for basking on a thermostat set at 85-90 degrees
Cool side 72-75 degrees
3 hides
Large water bowl
Cork bark and greenery
This is a fantastic Mexican Black king snake.
Good for families, but with adult supervision.

Foster update on Solomon❤️
Some fun facts on Solomon the mangrove monitor.

Species: Varanus indicus

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Chordata

Class: Reptilia

Order: Squamata

Suborder: Anguimorpha

Family: Varanidae

Genus: Varanus

Subgenus: Euprepiosaurus

Species: V. indicus

A bit on their geographic range.

The mangrove monitor's range extends throughout northern Australia, New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands, where it inhabits damp forests near coastal rivers.

The mangrove monitor is one of only two species of monitor lizards that possess salt-excreting nasal glands, the other being V. semiremex, which enables them to survive in saltwater conditions and to consume marine prey.

The mangrove monitor is an opportunistic carnivore, feeding on the eggs of reptiles and birds, mollusks, rodents, insects, crabs, smaller lizards, fish, and carrion.
Mangrove monitors are the only monitor capable of catching fish in deep water.

Solomon has been hiding, and this is expected, as Solomon was not handed.
Once Solomon becomes adjusted to his new enclosure, and becomes more comfortable, i will be working on trust building, and eventually, handling.

Researching is so very important on reptiles, and their husbandry, diet, and their behavior.
These monitors are very intelligent and observing their acceptance to handling and their trust in their keepers is very rewarding for both keeper and reptile.

Stay tuned for more updates on Solomon.

He’s so fast i can’t get a clear picture.

I am very excited to work with Solomon.

We have a 30 day quarantine, then Solomon will be available for adoption.
Welcome to North Texas Reptile Rescue❤️

He came with a chincilid fish.
If anyone wants the fish, please come get him.
I am not correctly set up for a fish, nor do I have experience with fish.

Would like him to go tonight if possible.
Message me.
