couple years ago, millie's mom double clutched, delivering her second litter 11 weeks after the first. since then, I kinda lean towards the idea that infernalis have roughly 10 week gestation period. (i know - study of one...)

here's millie, 11 weeks out of brumation. she's gained 70% body weight and just refused her first meal. (last year she gained 51% body weight before delivering).

here's the fun part - males were only introduced to the tank 3.5 weeks ago.

what's your hypothesis?

Love the scales. 😍

Color isn't actually on the scales though; they're mostly clear. Color is controlled by four specialized cells in the soft skin underneath the scales.

Just before shedding, lipids and enzymes fill the layer between the old scales and the new. A female's fresh shed releases the pheromones and males in the area quickly take notice.

He was on her within an hour of shedding. Confirmed lock within four hours.

first i was surprised to find a bell pepper growing in the paludarium.

then i became curious - how big will it grow?

now i’m annoyed cause it casts so much shade. but i’m also amazed at the fruit and want to let it ripen.

yes, the snakes occasionally climb it though i haven't captured a pic.

Our first garter. We incorrectly thought male and never changed her name.
5 yrs old.
Unusually dark colors.
Has never had a live birth.
We have 5 infernalis in a community tank (2.3). Both her female tank mates are younger but larger; they delivered this Spring.

Live Birth

While the vast majority of snakes lay eggs, garters are ovoviviparous which means that the baby develops within an egg that stays inside the mother. The growing babies are incubated in the lower abdomen, about half way down the mother’s body for 2-3 months. At birth, the mother delivers each clear, soft egg sac. Within moments, the snaklett breaks through and takes its first breath.
