Goose went hunting for ducks, but came home with his own (very well hidden) souvenir! We were able to find the cause of his eye irritation and remove it to get Mr. Goose some instant relief. Every case and treatment is rewarding, but being able to send Goose home the same day knowing we fixed his problem warms our hearts a little extra!
Here's just a sneak peek of all the cuties we see throughout the week! In exams, before and after surgery, our main goal is patient comfort, client understanding, and a good experience for everyone. Give us a call if your pet needs an eye exam for everything from dry eye, ulcers, glaucoma, or cataract surgery - we would love to see you and your pet!

Every pet reacts differently to being in pain, but these are some signs that your pet's eyes could be uncomfortable and it may be time to see a vet:
1. Squinting, rubbing, and excessive tearing - this is often the first sign that there is something irritating your animal's eyes. Just like our own eyes, theirs will water more and increase the amount of blinking to help remove an irritant from the surface of the eye. If that doesn't work, they will try and rub their eyes. Rubbing the eye can be the most definitive symptom as well as the most detrimental, as it can worsen a small issue and also introduce different bacteria to the eye/any potential wounds. Ulcers and dry eye can be very irritating to the animal's eyes.
2. Redness - this symptom can be very indicative that there is an injury or issue with the eye, as the cornea itself does not normally have any blood vessels on it. When there is an ulcer on the eye, the body's immune system should recognize that and send in blood supply to help heal the wound, similar to how a scratch will bleed and form a scab to heal. Seeing blood vessels on the cornea can be a sign of chronic irritation, ulceration, or other disease. The whites of a dog's eye seeming more bloodshot or red can be a sign of disease processes like glaucoma or allergic conjunctivitis.
3. Being head shy - this means your pet is very cautious and avoidant of you petting their head or certain parts of their face, which can be a sign that their eyes are bothering them and don't want you messing with them. This can be seen when they have an ulcer, glaucoma pain, or even when you try to administer drops.
4. Changes in energy or habits - this is a typical symptom for when you aren't feeling well, but a number of ocular conditions can increase their desire to be left alone or not engage in their usual routines. Like with other injuries or disease, the eyes require a lot of the body's energy to heal, so they may spend more time sleeping or not want to go on t
As a specialty vet clinic, we work closely with primary care veterinarians in the area to help them care for their patient's eyes, but sometimes a condition or pet may need the extra expertise that a certified ophthalmologist has. This can be due to an eye problem that is not improving, they are at risk of losing an eye or their vision, or there is an emergency that occurred.
Although a lot of our patients are referred by a primary care veterinarian, it is not required to schedule an appointment with our doctor! If there is ever a concern for your pet's eye, you are more than welcome to reach out to us or your primary veterinarian to get their eyes checked out and kept healthy.

Ever wonder what those things we put in your dog's eye are when you come in for an exam? They're more than just some fancy eyelashes, as they help us measure a dog's tear production and diagnose conditions like Dry Eye.
Schirmer tear tests are done for humans as well to diagnose similar conditions, but they have to leave the strips in for 5 minutes. So if you're curious what it feels like, you can!
