What’s better than one fluffy bunny first thing in the morning? TWO fluffy bunnies first thing in the morning!!

As a veterinary ophthalmologist, Dr. Nettune can see all species of animals and their eyeballs, but usually it’s just cats and dogs coming through the clinic. We are excited to see all of our patients, but maybe just a little extra excited to see Marshmallow and Fluff 🫣😉🩵

We would never be so blasphemous to claim a patient as our favorite, but if we did, Cotton Eye Joe would definitely make the short list! Not only was he perfectly named, but he was the happiest and sweetest boy for every visit with us!

When we first met, it was obvious that he had a dermoid on his left eye, but it did not seem to bother him in the slightest. As he is currently available for adoption, it was agreed that removing the benign abnormality was in his best interest to find his forever home. Thankfully, his dermoid only involved his lower eyelid and a small portion of his conjunctiva.

We saw Cotton Eye Joe 2 weeks after his surgery, and he had healed wonderfully and as expected. Although his name is a little less accurate, he remains the best boy and in great spirits!

Blink 🤝 French Bulldogs

Truly, we love all the animals that walk through the clinic, but there’s just something about having two 5 month old Frenchie puppies that makes everyone lose their minds a bit. Both Pearl and Rocky came in to have their cherry eyes replaced on the same morning. The puppies both had successful procedures and received lots of pre and post-op snuggles!

It’s always amazing to see what a couple weeks, some supportive medications, dedicated owners, and a cone can do!! We were shocked to see that Hawk’s eyes were both completely healed and infection free at his recheck appointment. We were able to stop all antibiotics, remove the cone (with supervision!), and start some anti-inflammatory drops to help reduce the long term scarring.

Hawk will be back in the clinic in about a month, and we are so excited to see what progress is made in that time. Good job healing Hawk and good job with all those drops Hawk’s mom!!

Ever wondered why a vet has sent home blood serum drops for a corneal ulcer? Well here’s why!

Bleeding is an important part of healing, as it contains a number of properties to both protect the wound while it is healing and also keep bacteria at bay. The cornea is a naturally avascular surface, meaning there are no blood vessels present on a healthy cornea. This is the reason a scratch on the eye and quickly worsen, as the body has to grow the blood vessels to the wound (and they only grow half a millimeter a day!).

To help combat this, blood serum drops are applied to the eye to help stabilize it until the blood vessels reach the defect and infection. While it doesn’t make the blood vessels grow faster, it allows them more time to do their job, which is especially important when the wound is already infected.

How cool is that??

Symblepharon is a condition that we see frequently in rescues kitties as it is often the result of a feline herpesvirus infection while they are very young. Even if the infection flare is treated, the scarring remains.

The adhered scarring is not painful, and the cats are typically still visual and comfortable, although there may be some blind spots. Due to the scarring being composed of conjunctival tissue, it is very difficult to permanently remove the tissue as it will grow back.

Most of the time, the scarring is just a cosmetic change for the cat long term. They are still able to get around and assume a normal lifestyle, just with a few extra accessories!

We do everything to keep your pet’s eyes healthy, visual, and comfortable while making sure you walk out the door knowing exactly what is going on and have a plan on how to treat your pet. All our exams are done in the room with the owners, and treats are always being handed out to the good boys and girls. We love what we do and would love to help your pet’s eyes should they need it!!

We first met Guppy shortly after he was rescued from a local shelter back in February. He had a number of health concerns, but he was brought to see us as there was concern for a deep ulcer in his right eye.

Upon exam, we were able to confirm that Guppy had a perforation on his right cornea that was sealed with a blood clot, as well as a number of distichia rubbing the cornea. After medications (and a cone) we were able to say Guppy’s eye had healed, and it appeared that the distichia were not causing him too much issue. We sent Guppy on his way with lots of love!

However, we got a call from the Rescue that Guppy was holding his right eye shut and it appeared like he may have another scratch. Guppy came back in, and sure enough he had another scratch in almost the same location! Because of the recurrence and location, Dr. Nettune suspected that there was an ectopic cilia that was causing all of Guppy’s problems. After the ulcer had healed, we were able to sedate Guppy and remove the bothersome ectopic cilia and distichia once and for all!!

Guppy is definitely a favorite patient as he is a giant love bug. Hopefully now that we’ve taken care of his eye issues, he will find his forever home to give him all the love and treats he deserves!

One of the most common procedures we perform at Blink is sedated dissection and cryogenic-freezing of masses on and around the eyelids. This is a very safe, non-invasive, and often curative way to remove a variety of types of masses and growths that can cause irritation to both the eye and patient.

As it is only sedation, it is a great way to help provide our older and more delicate patients the same level of care without putting them through a full anesthetic procedure. Most often, we see the patient for an exam in the morning, do the procedure at lunch, and then they go home later that same afternoon! Since there are no sutures, they only have to wear a cone for 24-48 hours. Everyone wins!

This is a patient who came in with a mass on the inner corner of their eye, that had started to rub on the cornea and cause the patient discomfort. We removed the mass without interfering with the conformation of the eyelid, and froze the location to help dissuade further cellular growth. Despite some pigment loss, you could hardly tell there used to be something there when they came in for their postop exam!

Baxter is one of our happiest patients, who will always schmooze you out of half a jar of treats and find where his favorite blue turtle toy is so he can carry it around for his entire visit.

We have been treating Baxter for his Golden Retriever Pigmentary Uveitis (GRPU) for a little over a year, and although the treatments have helped slow down this progressive disease process we have had to stop treatment at times to treat corneal ulcers. To help combat the recurrence of ulcers from Baxter being a happy boy outside, his mom has decided to train him to be comfortable wearing goggles.

This morning, Baxter’s mom sent us a picture of our good friend Baxter in the googles and we knew we couldn’t keep it to ourselves. Please enjoy said photo on the last slide 🐶🥽
