Last week X-Port Paws pulled this little Dane from south Texas. She was supposed to get transported up to us when she was stable this week. They did a blood transfusion on Friday but sadly she went into cardiac arrest and passed this morning. It was too much for her little body 😞

We named her Wednesday. She had soft beds and sweaters waiting for her. She had a home. I am so angry with the people who let this happen to her. The ones who passed her by on the streets for so long that it got this bad. But I am also so grateful that she passed surrounded by warmth and soft touches and a ton of people rallying behind her.

Run free, Wednesday. It may only have been for a short time, but you were loved.

It’s World Mental Health Day 🧠 for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma. I’ve struggled with depression since my teens, and in 2013, I was diagnosed with dysthymia, a form of persistent, low-level depression. It’s not always easy to talk about mental health, but I’ve found that being open is part of healing and hopefully encourages others to feel more comfortable with their own struggles.

One thing that has always been a light through my darkest moments is animals. My dogs, Jake and Puzzle, have been by my side through it all, offering unconditional love and comfort. They don’t judge or ask questions; they’re just there. For so many of us, pets are more than just companions—they are our lifelines.

If you’re going through a tough time, please know you’re not alone. Surround yourself with what brings you peace, whether it’s a furry friend, nature, or just someone to talk to. It’s okay to seek help and prioritize your well-being.

The day after we lost Ellie I photographed a celebration of life session for Oliver, who is in congestive heart failure. It was his 12th birthday and his soul shone so bright with his family surrounding him. It did my heart so much good to see him showered with love and treats 🧁

National Black Dog Day on October 1st encourages the adoption of a dog in the darker shades. Black dogs are less likely to be adopted for no other reason than their coloring. Regardless of behavior, size, breeding, personality, or age, the phenomenon persists.

At Haute Dog Pet Photography, we have also found a leading concern among inquiries is whether we will be able to capture dark/black dogs as well, given the number of people who struggle to get those bright happy eyes, particularly in cell phone photos.

Frankly, we think black dogs are much like black dresses – gorgeous, classic, and everyone should have one. Using professional lighting equipment, we adore making black dogs shine just like their canine counterparts in any setting!

Monday started out like any other day. I hopped on the computer, knocked out emails, worked on some editing, headed to the barn, then met up with a lovely pup to do a DNA test for his breed reveal. Out of nowhere on the drive home I thought to myself that it had been one year and one day since we lost our last dog, Fletcher. I had the gall to think to myself “maybe the streak is over” and we’ll get a little bit of a break from the Rainbow Bridge. Losing four in 24 months was rough.

When I got home there was blood and vomit everywhere. I checked the cameras to figure out who it was and rushed Ellie to the vet where they bolused IV fluids. X-rays didn’t show any significant abnormalities. Her chest was clear, there were no blockages. They sent her home with some meds, but the blood didn’t stop. At 11pm she got an injection of Cerenia and finally she relaxed. We bundled her up on a pile of beds in our room for the night and took her back to the clinic in the morning. Then her white blood cells and albumin came back elevated. The vets did an ultrasound in advance of exploratory surgery and found it. A mass in her bowel, enlarged stomach lining, and an affected lymph node. Our options were hospice care with the likelihood she could go in pain, or give her her wings.

She was supposed to turn 10 in two months. We raised her from a freckle-bellied pup and she was the HBIC of our pack. Her resting bitch face was second to none, but she had a heart of gold. She loved sunbathing and LIVED for food. We always said she was too smart for her own good. You could see the wheels turning in her head calculating her next move. When we’d take the dogs to the lake to swim, she would chase after the toy once or twice before hanging back on the shore, waiting for the others to rush out to get it. Then when they were within feet of winning the race to bring the toy back to us, Ellie would pounce on their head, push them under the water, and sn**ch the toy triumphantly.

Last weekend we took Ellie and Valor shopping at Lowes. I told her we’d get cheeseburgers on the way home, but so many people wanted to stop and love on her at the store that by the time we headed home it was later than expected and we had other things to get done. I told Adam to skip the burgers, we’d get them another time.

Yesterday we sat in the sun for a few minutes and tried to feed her a double cheeseburger, but it was too late. She felt too sick and didn’t want to eat it.

Please don’t skip the burgers. We had no idea this was coming and I wish so badly I could rewind just one week and stop for the damn burgers. Please give your dog an extra treat today for Ellie and don’t take the moment for granted. It will literally bring me joy if you tag me in a photo of it.

Last night as you looked to the stars, a new one should have shone a little brighter ✨ Our hearts go out to Teeny’s family. 🌈
