Is your dog eating cicadas? Is this safe? Here's what you should know.
➡️ Generally, if your pet eats a cicada – don’t panic. They aren’t toxic, and even contain protein.
➡️ We’re hearing from some owners that their dogs are eating large quantities of cicadas and as a result, having tummy issues like diarrhea and vomiting. Excessive eating of any type of food or something in the environment can throw off a pet’s GI system.
➡️ If your dog likes to overindulge on cicadas: keep a watchful eye - making sure your dog doesn’t get dehydrated and continues to pass stool. Most pets will recover from consuming them, but calling your vet when your pup has an upset stomach is always a good idea. We can determine what actionable steps need to be taken, such as watchful waiting or for more severe cases, booking an in-home visit for subcutaneous fluids to prevent dehydration and anti-nausea medication.
How to keep your dog away from cicadas? That’s a harder one to answer. Dogs love cicadas, as do most animals enjoying the summertime weather outside!
✔️ With cicadas out in full force, keep a close eye on your pet when outside on a walk or in the backyard.
✔️ Keep them on a leash when you can.
✔️ Check your yard and remove any exoskeletons that are left behind.
The good news? Cicadas will begin to die off in a few weeks, so this challenge will subside soon. When in doubt, ReadiVet is one call away if you need us!

Following her love of caring for animals, she graduated from UT Knoxville (Go Vols!) and started as an associate in a companion animal practice. Three years later, she transitioned to providing relief services full-time and became involved with a high volume spay and neuter clinic. Her expertise involves soft tissue surgery, wound management and radiology.
As a true Tennesseean, Dr. Matthews was born and raised in Baxter, TN. When she’s not caring for animals both big and small, she loves to read, explore national parks and hike locally. We're thrilled to have Dr. Matthews, and she can’t wait to meet you!
