The tiny 6-lb chihuahua who refused to give up has been named ❤️
He was attacked by large dogs and was rushed to the ER, where we learned he had multiple puncture wounds, fractured ribs, pulmonary contusions (bruising on his lungs), and a pneumothorax — a collapsed lung caused by a broken rib penetrating the chest cavity.
Pocket spent three days in the ICU on oxygen support, IV fluids, heavy pain management, and wrapped in a compression-style cast to stabilize his chest so he could breathe. His breathing slowly improved and he was finally weaned off all oxygen support!
But, when the doctors noted he wasn’t bearing weight on his hind legs, they quickly got updated x rays and things got even more serious: he had spinal injury causing luxation (+/- a possible compression fracture) of the T4-T6 vertebrae from all the trauma his tiny body went through. An experienced ER veterinarian told us in her professional opinion, he would likely never walk again. Our options were heartbreaking — humane euthanasia or a slim chance that he might regain mobility with intensive pain control and strict rest.
Pocket had already fought so hard. We chose to fight with him.
He was transferred to our partner clinic for 5 days and then to an incredible medical foster. Not long after, we got the message we prayed for: “And we’re up.” A photo followed — Pocket standing tall on all four legs. His mobility kept improving, and he is now using his hind legs without issue.
A neurologist interpreted his radiographs and described him as a “non-ambulatory paraparetic,” but Pocket clearly hadn’t read that report — he was too busy healing, walking, and even kicking his hind legs on assessments our veterinarian performed. This tiny survivor continues to defy every odd placed against him.
Pocket is nothing short of a miracle❤️
But his journey isn’t over. Because of the spinal injury, he requires strict rest and careful management for several more weeks to prevent further injury that could lead to permanent paralysis. He also needs frequent sedated bandage changes while his wounds are healing. Thankfully, he’s in the loving hands of an amazing medical foster who adores him.
Pocket’s hospitalization alone exceeded $4,000 — and his care is still ongoing.
We’re asking for your support so we can continue giving him every chance he’s fought so hard for.
Pocket wants to keep fighting. We want to keep fighting with him.
Will you please help us? ❤️
So far we’ve raised $1600 towards his medical bills and are hoping we can all rally together to get his costs covered!
