AVIAN BIRD FLU H5N1 🐦 Hi, I’m Lauren, a Certified Pet Nutritionist and Pet Store Owner! 👋 I haven’t seen too much reporting on the avian flu, but I will try to keep you guys as updated as possible. Current list of safe raw or under similar category pet food that we carry:✅Green Juju✅Vital Essentials✅OC Raw✅Smack✅K9 Naturals🐶What is effected?Currently, Northwest Naturals has issued a recall on Frozen Turkey Diets for Cats due to 1 cat death. Any food raw, freeze-dried, dehydrated, air dried, or cooked food that is not sterilized or cooked under required state/country guidelines would be at risk due to the H5N1 outbreak that is contaminating poultry, beef, eggs, dairy, and goats (most common pet food uses). 🐶How could this happen?There are many factors - and we don’t know 100% how the Northwest Naturals incident happened, but we do know that positive testing of their food was sampled from an open bag of food, which is not usually the process. This could mean unless the food from other batches or from the supplier tests positive, then the food could not be the sole cause. (speculation of course). Another reason could be that the strain is mutating and it survived the HPP process. Again, this is speculation on my behalf and just throwing some what-ifs in the mix. 🐶What can we do?I would reach out directly to the company if you have specific questions about your lot of food or if there is an outbreak at any of their facilities or farms. I think with any food raw, air dried, cooked, canned, kibble there is always risks. It is up to us to hold the manufacturers and farmers accountable to have safe living environments for all animals used in pet food. We need to ask questions and challenge these brands to build relationships with farmers and have more safe guards put in place.
