Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common causes of chronic pain in older pets. It is estimated that 20% of adult dogs suffer from OA pain, with that number jumping to 75% in medium and large sized dogs. Signs of OA can include difficulty getting up and down, difficulty with stairs, and tiring more quickly during walks. We recently had a patient who unfortunately tested Heartworm positive, we used the blood sample collected to look under the microscope and saw the microfilariae larvae that's shown in the video. It's important to note that while microfilariae circulate in the bloodstream, the adult heartworms reside in the heart and pulmonary arteries. The severity of heartworm disease is primarily associated with the presence of these adult worms, which can cause damage to the cardiovascular system.
