It's National Poison Prevention week, and what better way to keep vigilant than to educate ourselves? We've seen our fair share of animals ingest things that weren't meant for them, but what is toxic for them?

Onions and garlic are common ingredients that are toxic to both cats and dogs. Another danger out there for them is Xylitol, a sugar substitute that is usually found in chewing gums, sugar-free candy, and human dental care products. Of course, we can't forget lilies and other common household plants and flowers, which are extremely toxic for cats to ingest or even come in contact with a small amount of their pollen. Then there are grapes and raisins, which pose an extreme danger to dogs. Chocolate is a well known toxin for dogs, which many pets get into over the holidays, so make sure you keep it up and away from your furry family.

If your pet ingests something that wasn't meant for them, make sure to call the ASPCA Poison Control hotline right away at (888) 426-4435 and immediately bring them to your nearest available vet.
