Sailing for Rhinos was a hit, and we owe it all to our wonderful supporters! We thank each and every one of you who joined us on Wednesday. A big shoutout to our volunteers and staff who also played a vital role in making this day a success. We are forever grateful for their hard work. Don’t have a ticket? Tickets are still on sale for $35 at the door. Once there, each guest will also have to sign an electronic waiver prior to sailing.

Experience the power of giving back! Martha, one of our dedicated zoo volunteers, has made a generous contribution to Sailing for Rhinos in support of Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. Through a recent trip, she gained insight into the conservancy's tireless efforts to protect endangered species and uplift local communities through healthcare and sustainable projects. Through collaboration with the neighboring Borana Conservancy, they have successfully merged two separate land areas to create a vast 93,000-acre protected landscape for rhinos and other wildlife, ensuring their safety and preservation. Thank you, Martha for your contribution and longtime dedication to the zoo ❤️ Enjoy these beautiful pictures Martha took on her trip of a lifetime!

Attending Sailing for Rhinos not only supports rhino conservation but also the protection of other species across Africa. Through research, awareness campaigns, community participation, and collaboration with local wildlife authorities, Action for Cheetahs in Kenya (ACK) works to safeguard cheetahs in Kenya. They also encourage student research initiatives to promote a sustainable coexistence between humans and wildlife.

The club, located in the beautiful White Rock Lake park in Dallas, has been promoting sailing and sailboat racing in North Texas for years. As a volunteer-based club, CSC is passionate about racing and offers a range of events, including club-sponsored regattas. They also have a thriving youth program and adult sailing lessons. For two decades, CSC has partnered with us to make Sailing for Rhinos a success, donating their club and resources to help AAZK with protecting endangered rhinos. Our zoo was lucky enough to be in the path of totality during yesterday’s solar eclipse!! We got to see some animal behavior just before, during and after it. Truly an awesome experience!

Lisa New, our new CEO wanted to participate so here’s why Lu has her heart. ❤️
I’m too new to Dallas Zoo to have an animal who has my heart yet, other than all of them of course. However, at Zoo Knoxville, there is an animal who has my heart. His name is Mwelu, Lu for short! Lu came to Zoo Knoxville at 6 months old to be peer reared and introduced to the chimp troop and I was privileged to be his caregiver. He has grown up to be a beautiful animal with a goofy personality who charms, delights and terrifies guests with his penchant for leaping off a bank of rocks and slamming his feet into the glass. When I left Zoo Knoxville, the Board of Directors named Chimpanzee Ridge in my honor and I was very touched. Lu was an original resident of Chimp Ridge. He is why I stayed in the zoo business to do a thesis on chimpanzee socialization instead of moving to field research. For all these reasons Lu chimpanzee is the animal who has my heart.
Here’s why the black breasted leaf turtles have Sterling S.’s heart ❤️
The pair on exhibits names are Lorna and Wirt. They are one of my favorite animals to work with in the department because they are so expressive and will actually get excited to see you. They already have giant eyes but when they see a zoologist (or food) they get even bigger! These guys are so curious and will always interact with guests through the glass. They even come out for our keeper chats. Every day working with them is exciting because you never know what adorable thing they will do next. I’m so happy and privileged to be able to work with such unique species.
Here’s why Zola has Sydney W.’s heart ❤️
This is Zola, the African Elephant, and she has my heart. 💕 She has the sweetest personality and always makes me smile. Watching her be an Auntie to Oki has been so much fun! One of my favorite things she does is play in the pool! She splashes and rolls around, it’s always entertaining. I also enjoy giving her mushy bananas or pumpkin, she smacks her mouth a lot while eating them and always makes me laugh.
Here’s why Ty and Scarlet have Lauren M.’s heart ❤️
The maned wolves have been such a fun new species to work with. They are really shy and skittish which makes it challenging to earn their trust. For me that makes being one of their keepers even more special now that they recognize me and are comfortable around me. Building a relationship with them has been so special. They are so smart and have proved themselves very capable of learning new behaviors. I particularly love how Scarlet will follow me all the way down the fence in the mornings and how Ty likes to pounce and catch bugs.

They are usually snuggled up together, but if you are lucky enough to see them out and about, you'll see their beautiful quills and the cutest faces. They are never shy to let keepers know their feelings. Our love for them will never be reciprocated though because of their one true love, corn.
